Take time to read the many other posts and you would see that those members with real sense have one belief: WE CANNOT COMPARE DRIVERS DIRECTLY FROM DIFFERENT ERAS AND SO CANNOT CONCLUDE WHO'S THE BEST EVER.

This is just going to turn into another MS-bashing session looking at previous posts of this nature...and i really do not think its the most intriging....

It's interesting.the common knowledge says fangio, but i don't ness. buy that .I've been reading abit of history now that i have the internerd and i'm quite stunned at just how good some drivers were.Ascari springs to mind as a stunning driver that we never hear about ,(& i thought mr ferrari was just being nice to describe Ascari as the best ever)and there are others. The biggest surprise was james hunt! Yes the womanising moaner who 'stole' niki lauda's 2nd championship. He drove absolutly on the limit all the time and dominated every team mate just as MS does

But i'm not saying hunt was the best!

Does anybody remember a chap named Jimmy Clark? He wasn't too bad at getting his car around the course, and decimated every teammate he had, except, of course, for Graham Hill.

It's my (very humble) opinion that Clark was the best driver ever, in any type of car, in any era. The man was amazing. He won with fast cars, he won with slow cars. He was just a race driver, through and through.

Look at how he died, racing a lower level Formula 2 race out of a sense of honor and duty to Colin Chapman and Lotus. Do you think Mika would jump into a McLaren sports car out of a sense of duty to Ron Dennis, let alone lower himself into the lower ranks of the Formula division.

Clark came from a different era, when a winner's check was a few hundred pounds and the drivers were too busy working (driving races in different formulas around the world) to work out in the gym and get as fit as today's pilots.

The same goes for Fangio, Nuvolari (excuse the spelling), Ascari, Hill Sr., Jack Brabham, etc.

Since you haven't specified whether this category is relegated to only Grand prix drivers, my vote goes to Hannu Mikkola. The best DRIVER ever!

I would have to agree with zealot. It is J Clarke, at home in Cortina's, Indy, F1 and the odd sports car a totally natural driver.

A very very close scond would be Stirling Moss and Fangio both along the same lines.

After that it has to be Surtees and Hailwood, both going from two to 4 wheels AND winning, Surtees probably the better. but Hailwood for his TT history (13 years out of saddle, and he still wins at TT)

After that it clouds into so many stars, Rindt, Senna, Villnuve, Hill, Hill, Schumaker, Prost, Hunt to name but a few.

Finally in memory for those who tried and died at the wheel honary equal to those above.

I voted for other, not because it was'nt one of the three, but because you can't really say.

There have been way too many brilliant drivers to name just one.

Alain Prost:51 Wins, 4 WDC, The professor

Juan Manuel Fangio: won his 5th (count them again, thats 5 people) at age 46

Ayrton Senna:Tripple WDC, one of the many drivers who's full potential will never be known

Michael Schumacher:3 WDC and counting. The best driver in F1 today

Sir Jackie Stewart:Another Tripple WDC, and saftey advocate.

Graham Hill:You were never going to fill these shoes Damon.

Sir Jack Brabham: 3 WDC and the only man to win in his own car. Home town hero for me

Sir Stirling Moss:Arguably the best driver ever to not win the WDC

Jim Clark:Another great lost

Gilles Villeneuve: We will never know what hights he could have reached. The records show no WDC but a brillaint driver an anyones books.

And these are just a few. How could we say one was better than all the others. Different drivers, different cars, different competition, different era's. All of these drivers are brilliant. I could never pick one as it would be an insult to the others.

My money would always be on Tazio Nuvolari, personally.

But I take my hat off to every single man or woman who has strapped on a crash-hat and raced a Grand Prix car. From Senna to Lavaggi, Fangio to de Beaufort. They are all more accomplished than me, they are all heroes.

For a man (or woman) of your age...its strange why you can't see certain facts that even somebody half your age can...

Michael Schumacher is the best driver today.

Jacques is the best you say? Lol...he was beaten in qualifying by his teammate, for one...and this happened more than once...so JV havent convincingly trashed his teammate yet...where does this rank Panis..Better than the best?!!

JV no doubt is a fast driver..quicker than Damon, HHF and the likes, but to say he is better than Michael...its a little far off...maybe in the "olden" days of 97 he is on par with Schumacher, but now he seemed to be slightly losing himself...

Fangio, Prost, Schumacher and Nuvolari in no definite order.

Pick your era and driver.

The thing is we'll never know and that's all to the good of the sport.

Is this a serious thread or is it another one of those silly ones instigated by AMoffat? This doesn't mean I am angry, it means AM is mad, literally.
