Apparently, a catastrophic fault can develop with the N57 engine in the cars during pursuit activities, potentially causing a fire, and, in one tragic incident recently, the fault (I couldn't find what it actually was) caused one police car in a pursuit to crash and the police driver lost his life.

More disturbing is the fact that both BMW and the police and the Home Office had been aware of this fault for some years, but, until recently, individual forces had not been updated, with BMW saying that the engine was not suited for the way that the cars needed to be driven in a pursuit. Now, many forces have been withdrawing the cars with the N57 engine and replacing them with cars from other manufacturers.
And at what cost to the taxpayer?

Derwent is heading for a stewards' enquiry!
Sadly that tragic incident was here in Cumbria. It would seem that the car and others like it had a series of engine faults and used a lot of oil. Either the engine seized or exploded when on the way to a call, on the M6 near Penrith.
It seems that other forces have had problems with diesel BMWs. However BMW were not informing forces directly. It seems incredible that these big engined BMWs were unsuitable for driving fast, given that they spend most of the time on patrol at normal speeds.
It looks likely that there will be a massive damages claim from the widow against the local force, BMW and possibly the home office. Individual forces may them sue BMW which is perhaps why they have so hastily closed that department.

Given that robots can't tell which squares have traffic lights in them, how are they expected to read a fuzzy number plate properly?

You're going to be disappointed Mr Gents. Ken has just announced he's leaving - at pains to stress it's his choice, sounds like a "wind down" rather than retirement.

Interesting to see who takes over.

It'll be on the Sounds app - around 11:50 a.m. today, 17th January.

Another nail in Radio 2's coffin. Another reason to change my listening habits.

I wonder who his PC replacement will be?

Some suggestion on another forum that the issue was related to the number of times that the motorway cops frequently go from prolonged tickover when "plotted up" awaiting a call to almost immediate full throttle action for a relatively prolonged period - causing big-end bearing failure and engine disintegration. Given the promotion of the "Ultimate Driving Machine" this may seem unfortunate. I'd have also thought that an engine blow-up shouldn't cause a police driver to crash as was the case for the unfortunate PC in Cumbria.

When I was driving the M240i Safety Car at Oulton last year, one of the circuit recovery team opined that after the number of issues he'd had in his day job with Police BMWs he wouldn't give one garage space.......

The final nail I fear as far as I'm concerned - I'll be off!

Going to Greatest Hits Radio I believe - the same station Simon Mayo went to when he left R2. Might have to give that a try, as I need my Popmaster fix!

As for who'll replace him at R2 - dunno, but I'll make a prediction (without prejudice!) that it's a gay, cross-dressing non-white person that ticks all the woke boxes!

Mayo went to Scala Radio for a time, a really odd "Classical" station that tries to combine Classical music with a pop-culture presentation style. At least at the times I listened to it, and gave up. It was all a bit Heart with Highbrow Music.

I know I've mentioned it before but Boom Radio (on DAB & Alexa etc.) ticks all the boxes for me including having a number of the old Pirate/ Luxembourg/Original Radio 1 presenters. The also have another (internet only I think) station, Boom-Light which supposedly plays music from the 540's, but when I briefly listened to that they played some newer (but not too new) stuff too, all without inane DJ's.

Ten years ago or so I took over a mate and animated a Sat morning program, live and lasting one hour. Unfortunately I said to the responsible that one and a half hour would be better… My program was moved to Sunday, 8 to 10, was live except race weekends and was by far the best ever. So many calls we were totally unable to face the demand. Still exists, on RMC. Now its well paid…
