2019 FIA Formula 3 season

Well well, the FIA's stranglehold over the junior single seater ladder has almost been completed. The teams list for the 2019 season is out, and it is very GP3 focused. No Motopark, no VAR, but HWA join, and Prema unsurprisingly survive the jump.


The teams list:


ART Grand Prix
Campos Racing
Carlin
Charouz Racing System
Hitech GP
HWA Team
Jenzer Motorsport
MP Motorsport
Prema Powerteam
Trident

Whatever the F3-level alternatives are that will also run in 2019 are unclear, aside from the bizarre W Series and the ever-unimportant Euroformula Open series. Renault have their plans it seems.

Anyway, I can't imagine a calendar too different from past GP3 calendars, although I am hopeful for a cameo appearance at the Pau Grand Prix or the like. I also wonder what this move will mean for Macau and the likes of Japanese F3...

I can imagine Motopark's and VAR's anger at not being selected.
Especially when some teams that weren't involved in F3 or GP3 have been selected.

HWA? What single-seater experience do they have?
Charouz? They have been in F2 since - 1 full season?

Motopark not really a great surprise, as well known to Bruno since Russian Time days.

VAR more of a surprise though what issues since the investor/owner’s son stopped racing?

HWA and Charouz can afford the guarantees of running the three cars for the three seasons...

Do not forget the "F3 Euro Series" with the current cars supported by the current DTM organiser, which should run alongside DTM Events .



Charouz has been active racing team for severall years back in Formula 3000 so they are eligible to this new series alongside the fact that they also have deep pockets.


My personal guess is VAR and Motopark have been left aside for financial reasons.

I think there's no financial difficulty for Motopark and VAR, indeed Motopark express their anguish for failing to join new F3

So FIA F3 will jump from 240 hp to 350 hp. But the other "regional" F3 championships will remain with the previous performances.


That's a very stupid rebranding.

no it's not. it's been running like that for several years already with brdc f3 in the uk.

i guess they're running f3 and f3 regional on the same tyres as before?

This is just the same FIA stitch up, make all series spec, same suppliers, same teams, same people, this is why they hate GT3 and TCR so much,formulas outside of their control.

Always the great beauty of F3 was that there were several series worldwide that were basically all the same.

Now there are going to be something like ten series, of at least five different specs! Madness.

One has to admit, the "Regional F3" formulas (i.e., more powerful f4 cars) have been hugely popular. Maybe it really is the future?

Regional F3 cars use off the shelf 2.0 turbos (for instance, F3 Americas use the Civic Type R engine, while American F4 uses the base model Civic engine -- both stock block, off the shelf engines) which has to cut costs drastically compared to the highly tuned racing versions of engines used in classic F3, surely?

International F3 can be rebranded GP3. There is a clear distinct in the level and cost of Regional F3 and International F3.

One would have loved to retain classic F2 as an open formula, but ultimately F3000 -- which unfortunately ultimately became spec -- and GP2 has proved hugely popular, and eventually rebranded as F2 again. Much as Japan initially stuck with the old F2 rules, they will also stick with "classic" F3 for the time being too.

whilst i agree with you and i think standardising the formula renault level stuff is a good idea, i'm not sure it is the future in the uk - brdc f3 teeters on the brink despite a decent car, reasonably priced tyres and not completely daft running costs. granted, it's not the current spec regional f3, but it may as well be.

but maybe we can't support anything more expensive than f4 here any more.

I know it's way too early, it's just November 2018 but the speculation for drivers and where to go has already started for '19.

Prema: Schwartzman, Armstrong & Daruvala
ART GP/Renault Jr.: Lundgaard, Fewtrell, Drugovich
HiTech: Vips, Ahmed, Fenestraz

When do they start testing, after the Abu Dhabi GP? With GP3 cars?
