For all of his faults I don't think Bernie is responsible for the failings of Windows 10.

I think you can alsomst quantify BE and F1 as pre the 113 year rights deal and after....

Good bits - he organised the teams and made F1 promotable, without this the RD's and SFW's of the world would still be scratching around trying to hold a race team together on half a shoestring. He did the selling and they did the racing and then developed into selling when they had something to market.

Safety and medical - he listed to Prof Sid Watkins and recognised the poor or inconsistent for medical care at across the race calendar and the ongoing safety improvement at circuits, cars and equipment.

Personally I think the 113 FIA F1 rights deal has led F1 to where it is. It provided an almost unassailable rightsd holder, with a security of tenure unknown elsewhere and at a fraction of the value. This led to no competition for the rights, no review on perfromance , no competitive tenders for the rights which led to no incenctive for FOM to do promote F1, create value for stakeholders and be accountable for what F1 has become.

This in turn made F1 a safe long term cash cow for an investor and in came CVC who were on the same hymn sheet as Bernie - maximum profits for minimum spend and no real investment in the 'product'.

The result of all of this is an F1 that has chased the dollar around the world to whoever will pay the most, a grid of teams some of which can barely afford to take part (as shown by Manor) let alone compete, heritage circuits that can't afford to stage the races and TV companies who have paid masses rights fees for falling viewer numbers.

None of the above effects FOM's bottom line, it makes no difference to them if a circuit sells no tickets or the TV coverage attracts not a single viewer, they have banked their cheque before a car has turned a wheel. This can only be a bad thing and even where someone is brave enough to grumble about the 'show' then the FOM 'hand' is put into the lucky dip of gimmicks and pulls put the next great idea than may, might, could improve F1.

This is what Liberty have to reverse and I hope that RB can give them good direction and they listen and implement it.

i haven't read anything about this but i would think that with Liberty owning a chunk of both F1 and Formula E that there could be (at some point in the future) concerns about monopolies and Liberty's growing influence within the FIA.

When I first discovered motor sport a certain B. E. Ecclestone used to race a Formula 3 Cooper Norton, with some limited success.

Bernie goes back a long way and his roots are deep.

I chuck this in to the discussion for what it is worth.

He also lost one of his closest friends. Stewart Lewis-Evans died in crash driving Bernie's F1 Connaught. This affected him deeply and has undoubtedly influenced his decision making over the years. He knows the black side of Formula 1 as well as the glamourous front.

Giancarlo Minardi made a small team work for years until it became the RedBull junior team. He has made some relevant comments in an intertesting piece on the Autosport website that amount to agreeing with many of us that the system is broken.

We have several threads on here with ideas on how F1 should be fixed but the underlying theme is that we as enthusiasts are not happy with it at present and if it is to prosper Liberty must take notice. At present it is a franchise system with a limit of 10 teams and that limits many things

Yeah agree, a lot of drivers are missing out with the lack of seats in F1. Let's hope Liberty fixes it soon

The limit on teams isn't the problem. There isn't a queue of prospective entrants with enough money to be respectable.

By the same token, make the sanctioning fee cheaper for race tracks.

Not sure why but I have only just read Nigel Roebuck's comments about Bernie's time in F1. As usual for NR it is a great piece and worth seeking out on the Autosport website

Joe Saward's article is interesting, but saying BE just used money as a means to keep score, but wanted to get as high a score as possible due to competitiveness is the same thing as greed to me. Accumulation for its own sake, and which definitely hurt the circuits/promoters and teams and thus the sport as a whole. As moneyseeker said above the sale/appointment of the F1 management rights for such a long term seems pretty scandalous, you really wonder how that came about.

It is remarkable but not surprising it will take a team of people to replace him, let's hope they can do a better job for the sport's best interest.

A "BE stories" thread would be interesting! There has to be a lot we don't know (or that has receded into the forgotten past for most of us) both good and bad. Perhaps we might have to wait a few years yet for some of the best stuff to come out though.

Interesting that restrictions on uploads to social media from the paddock have been allowed at testing.
The new broom is sweeping already.

Well... that is something FOM can't control. I just posted my thoughts about the content of that video (was excellent). Maybe FOM can create similar content and post it themselves.
