coloured tank tape

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some custom coloured tank tape - or at least some darker blue than the standard pale blue offering that seems to be available?

Try Demon Tweeks.... they seem to have everything you've ever needed, millions of things you never knew existed... and a darn good mail order set-up

You could try your local Maplins electrical shop, they have loads of different colours of tank/duct/gaffer tape, not sure what shade of blue they do though.

Might be easier to buy a stock of tape, then paint the thing the same shade!!!

I've got green or black, think the green one was picked up from a garage somewhere.

It's a dark blue that I need to more closely match the colour of the bodywork on our FF1600. Tried t'itnernet, LeMArk ect, but no result.

Don't want to paint the car a different colour really...

Ah...I know a few people with dark blue cars, will ask, but think some may just use black!

See through tape means you can see the gaps in the bodywork. Bodywork from Swift is sometimes shall we say not quite up to McLaren standards.

Try http://www.gaffertape.com/cloth.php

I suspect that cost/minimum quantity may be severe.

You could ask about Tesa Tape from these people: http://www.speedsport.co.uk/.

I think they used to race blue F3 cars, so you never know.

I take it you'd need to apply it in a hurry? or is this just for general car preparation? Does it just need to last the duration of a race?

BTW, painting 'tank' tape isn't a brilliant idea as the silicone release coating on the 'waterproof' side (that stops the rubber adhesive on the tape sticking to itself on the roll) would resist the paint.

Its just to seal some of the bodywork 'joins' (For instance the damper cover, and over some of the Dzus fasteners in case they try to pop out after kerb hopping)and help secure it for testing, race and qually. Probably only on for 30 mins at a time.

Well, automotive vinyl may do the trick.

Pros...

It's available in 100's of colours. The adhsive is better than 'Tank' tape, though it's initial tack is not as high. it's thinner and is available in gloss/matt/metallic finishes so it will be less noticeable. It's the stuff some body graphics are made out of so you know it'll stay stuck. Not that expensive really. Available in relatively small quantities.

Cons..

It comes with a backing paper and cannot (easily) be torn by hand, so it is slightly more time consuming than tear'n'stick tapes (more of a cut-peel-and-stick). As it's thinner and doesn't have a scrim (woven fabric) it is not as 'tough'.... it'll stick better than tank tape after 30 mins, so getting off might take a bit longer.

I use large quantities at work, for industrial part identification (?!). You could probably source it from a local vehicle graphics company - or if you think it might be suitable but struggle to get it send me a PM and I might be able to sort something out (no promises!)

It's just a thought.

... and yes I know more about adhesive tape than the average person should!!!

I think the shear strength is not high enough on graphics film for what we need.

There is quite a bit of flex in the panels when subjected to deflection over kerbs etc and in our experience, film type of tapes do not have that suppleness and flexiblity to cope.

All ff1600 teams (well all that I have seen!) use tank tape to 'help' their body panels, it's just that we are trying to colour co-ordinate our tape!

Fair enough. I guess it depends on what you've tried in the past.
