I'm trying hard to resist boring everyone once again with my Bedford CF based motorhome fuel problem story from the late 70s ... I think forgetting stuff is excusable. I find it takes so long to do come things these days - like getting down in the grouns to crawl under something, that one's brain has moved on through several different things it was mulling in the background and the initial purpose for the action one was performing has long been assigned to the virtual Trash Bin. |

so when you said you've replaced everything you meant everything except the fuel hoses!

It's the same for most of us Iain. As long as we don't forget what direction we go when the green flag drops😃

There is a film which came out a few years ago called " Idiocracy ", about someone who awakes from suspended animation after 500 years to find that the media & commercialisation has turned all the people in the world into total idiots . It is quite funny , but seemed to have had limited coverage , possibly because it shows up the way the world is now going & the dumbing down on the generations that is happening . |

Is there some potential for the new recipe slowly introducing premature rubber hose ageing problems on older vehicles - especially older race cars or collection of historic stuff that is not in regular use? The question is based on no knowledge but a vague memory of some article read a long time ago when the US arable industry saw the option to grow stuff for producing fuel as likely more profitable than for food (given a drive to greenness in progress at the time) and many were concerned about the amount of methanol being proposed for the recipes and it effect on seals and hoses, etc., in older vehicles. |

most proper race engines use proper petrol, so should not be affected. Methanol and the absorbtion of water do wreak havoc with some old carbs/pumps and fuel lines though. I had a plastic external fuel filter on a Lambretta 5 years ago . . .lasted 250 miles and melted!

https://theshopmag.com/features/etha...s-carburetors/ It does cause a lot of problems , especially with older vehicles . Have been using fuel lines that are resistant to Ethanol for some years now , [not at work to reference part numbers , ] but it can still erode away metal parts in the fuel system . |

You're lucky in the UK with your fuel suppliers. In France it seems impossible to avoid at least a portion of bio components when refueling at a gaz station.

Yes, we can count on technocrats to imagine things like that before any concertation with the engine builders and car makers. Not surprising. We are dinosaurs and have to watch and stand this poor world wandering.
Re our historics, I change my fuel lines often but found viable solution for the carbs. Who cares for carburetors now? Not mentioning the warmth, the old engines getting more and more difficult to keep cool… |

Ever since AAOC and their Sunoco fuels arrived around 10 years ago, I've used nothing but. It's like an insurance policy for classic tuned engines.
I only use Super unloeaded and 5% max ethanol in my scooters and classic road cars, they're tuned accordingly! |

In other news --- Cambridge spends over £2 million building a roundabout into a
" Dutch Style " cyclist priority . I did look this up a couple of years ago . Only about half of Holland has cyclist priority roundabouts , and they have a far higher accident record than normal ones . So just more cycle insanity from councils while the Lockdown has been on . |

Phew that's nothing compared to Paris and suburbs. One lane is dedicated to cyclists about everywhere. Cant imagine the trafic jams when the holidays will be over… And this rises people aggressiveness at an unknown level between riders and drivers. Crazy.

Many years ago I spent some time with the UK RTA database for an analysis exercise when testing some software. Amongst many interesting data anomalies and randomly strange reports was one of a fatality on an historically dedicated (Dutch style separation of cyclists from both motorised vehicles and pedestrians) where 2 bicycles had collided and, iirc, a fatality had resulted. If not a fatality then a serious injury - but that was not uncommon even in the RTA database where one would not really expect Police involvement in an non-road related cycling accident. It was on a section of road I knew quite well. I can think of no good excuse for such an accident. |

Can,t find the original traffic/accidents reports , but this is one from another source . http://www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com...-cyclists.html Even with the Dutch awareness of cyclists , it shows that roundabouts with cycle priority have a much higher accident record than those without . And if you transport that to the UK , where , as you say , cyclists seem to have a lot less sense , then I think there will be an even bigger accident problem . |

And of course Cambridge, font of wisdom that it claims to be, has adopted the worst option because they are cramming the modifications into a space that has no room for the better option. Presumably anything will do so long as someone gets a box ticked somewhere. |

This is why I never cycle on the road, I always go on designated cycle paths. It’s not worth the risk of going on the road, seeing as a cycle for leisure purposes and it would no doubt take away some enjoyment having to watch out for vehicles all the time

For those of you that drive in Spain you will know that cyclist are some of the worst in the world. They take absolutely no notice of anything, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings mean nothing. If you are unlucky and catch up with more than one rider they will ride in the middle of the road and very often on the other side including round blind bends. If you catch up with a team just forget about going anywhere in a hurry ! I have personally witnessed people mown down by cyclist overtaking inside and outside of cars that have stopped at crossings

There's a good reason for that Gordon, they must follow the same rules as truck drivers! just take any highway there pulling a trailer at night and you learn quickly what wild means…
