Nelson Piquet Jr, Champion

Congratulations to the new British Formula 3 Champion, Nelson Piquet Jr.

He's had his critics, but it would be churlish to say the title was anything other than well-deserved.

Well done.

Yep, it pains me to congratulate him but well done Nelson!

Over the course of the season he has just about deserved it and his drives at Oulton Park in July were exceptional.

I think he'll find life a lot harder now as he moves further up the ladder though....

Congratulations not only to Piquet Jr but also to his Brazilian F3 team. Not easy to do so well in a different country.

Is he the youngest driver ever to win the British?

Ditto.

But despite supporting Nelsinho for various reasons (the main one, I was a great fan of his father), I cannot agree with Piquet Sr's claims ("Nelsinho is better than me" etc): there is no evidence that he is better than Pizzonia for example, the last Brazilian to win the British F3.

Many Brazilians (those disappointed with Barrichello, da Matta etc) hope that Nelsinho (because of his surname) will bring the title back to Brazil.

But we may we have to get used to the idea that he's good (F1 material, like Pizzonia or Massa), but not that good (championship material, like Emmo-Piquet-Senna). His test for Williams was really disappointing, and the far-from-dominating season too.

So, well done to Nelsinho, but he has to improve a lot for next year if he wants to do a Damon or a Jacques.

All parents think there children are fantastic. But no i dont think he is as good as his dad. He has not dominated in the way the really great champions do. Time will tell how he performs further up the ladder. Still my congratulation go to him.

GP2 in 2005, then. With Piquet Sports? There was a rumour his dad would take the second seat, but I won't hold my breath.

can't see that happening if what was said in motorsport news about not being able to drive a road car anymore (not sure if thats due to his injuries from indy '92 or from imola '87 though)

I imagine from Indy 92, since he was racing for several years after Imola 87

I think it wasn't as dominant because of Piquet Sr's decision to bring his own team to the UK. They got the setup right many times... but they clearly struggled everytime there wasn't much practice prior to qualifying.

Rosberg tried to do the same here in the Euroseries... and wasn't near as good as Piquet's.

Just curious... were they the first non-Brit team to win the title as well?

Well done to Piquet - IMO hes been the best driver overall this year, shame it wasnt Caroll that took the title but in the end the best man won, fair play. Where do u think he will go next? GP2 or the new Superfund series?

Yes and no!

The previous (maybe the first?) non-Brit "team" to win the title was Piquet Sr's "team", 28 years ago. But that wasn't "Piquet Sports".

It wasn't really a team - only Piquet and two Brazilian mechanics. For those of you who don't know the story, Piquet bought a new Ralt (in which he won the title) with money prizes, but had to cut a a deal with Mr Ralt, working as a cleaner in the Ralt headquarters in order not to pay garage rent. He also worked as David (or was it Geoff?) Brabham's truck driver, in exchange for lifts (he didnt have money to take the car and equipment around the UK).

So if you think that it was difficult for Nelsinho to win the title, imagine what his father had to do - Nelsinho had to struggle only to find the setups...
BTW, in 1978 Nelson broke the record of wins held by Jackie Stewart.

This is also why I think Nelson Angelo is just another very good driver, probably F1 material, but probably not the "next big thing" as Nelson Sr claims.

Ahhh ... GP2 vs Superfund! He'll go to one or the other, for sure ... depends which one comes out with the best package/drivers/competition/teams

Congratulations Nelsinho! (I'd say it in Portuguese but dunno how)

Well done Nelson! Good to see he proved the critics wrong, signed, sealed and delivered with a win.

On a random side note, anyone know his girlfriend's first name? Purely curiousity.

Students, eh? What are they like? Out all weekend in the English rain, supporting their F3 champion boyfriends.

Bet she missed her first lecture this morning. Jetlag indeed.

Tsk tsk.

Big congrats to Nelson. His efforts this weekend fully justified the championship. Heart goes out to AC, but he's proved he's a great talent too, and without the slick organisation behind him that NP has. That's not to detract from the little Brazilian feller's victory in any way!!!

As for next year, there may be a surprise in store on the Piquet front...,
