The outcome of the ROI will be clear by when the new Govt elects to release it.
If it's not at least 2 months before Homebush, then I expect the Libs will keep the event. Because they'll get the opportunity to be fawned over and indulged at Homebush, so will either not release it, or will say it's all hunky dory and above board. But if they release it well before Homebush, it means they've either found something wrong and can beat Labor with it, or have found a convenient excuse to not renew the contract. V8s will put as much pressure on as they possibly can, because the current contract ends on Dec 2013 - the Libs will be in until March 2015 at the earliest. Not even Labor will resurrect this event 2 years later. If it goes, it will stay gone. |

reading today that the sydeny theatre company gets more government support than the race and draws significantly smaller crowds, plus it pulls less interstate travellers

Wouldn't a "clever basket" try and lock the contract in past 2015 now then? |

They may well have tried to extend the contract, but that would have looked dodgy, and Labor wouldn't want to risk any political capital they have (which is almost zero) trying to do favours for V8S.
And peckstar - the Government contributes financially to lots of different pursuits - sports, arts, science. Remember, Eastern Creek was built with taxpayers money in 1993 - which I'll bet cost a lot more than the Sydney Theatre company gets. So too was Western Sydney Dragway. STC doesn't tear down and rebuild its sets & stages every year for a one-off event. It has a permanent facility and an operating grant and is a permanent venue for the dramatic arts and provides placements for young actors. Nobody is saying Governement shouldn't invest in sport, nor in motor racing. What we're discussing is paying millions of dollars to a private company to enable them to increase their profits, with unverified and highly suspect claimed returns for the taxpayer when there is a taxpayer owned venue 20 minutes away and those dollars could be used for upgrading our own infrastructure. |

really they kick in towards 9 million a year to STC that is much more than the v8's are getting. and the v8s get bigger crowds so as NSW taxpayer you subsidise each attendee about $5 per ticket at the v8's and around $20 per ticket for the STC and this does not include other "art" type programs, just one theater company, There is no difference between the two Eduardo, no matter how much mud you want to throw at tony ccohrane |

both are run by rich people who take a cut for themselves
both are in the business of entertainment and the development of their chosen field both sell themselves on how popular they are and how many people watch there product to separate v8s out as being different and deserving of less money is silly, both are just as worthy of the taxpayers moneys, except ones gets less and more people watch |

First of all - both sides of NSW parliament are agreeing to commit the same amount of funds back into Eastern Creek for upgrades. So motorsport benefits there.
And peckstar - $45m for venue & performances 12 months of the year for five years vs $42m (which is the total contract cost) for 5 weekends of performance over five years? No difference hey? And if you combine all the attendances at Sydney Theatre company - I'll wager there's as many, if not more attendees. And you completely missed/ignored the point about that money being part of a grant to provide funding for the performing arts industry as well as the STC itself. But that's really not the point. You can find all sorts of comparisons between V8s and other areas of government funding. The Sydney race needs to be justified as a stand-alone entity, regardless of what other sports/cultural pursuits/industries get. And nothing that has been revealed tells me that this is the case. The facts and figures quoted when the event was announced were flawed, projections about tourism numbers incredibly generous and documentation supporting those figures were hidden from public view. The deal was pushed through with a now-disgraced MP and a 'colourful' middleman and the event was originally rejected by Tourism NSW as not being credible or beneficial for the state. And Scuderus - I suspect you're right. Unfortunately. |
