Interesting, is how I would describe this weekend. Interesting to see how the SunRED SEAT's go, how Muller will do at Chevrolet, and how Vaulkhard (or rather the Lacettis) will do.

Farfus, lightning quick as always. Wonder if this will be the season he finally matures enough to actually not crash half the time.

No TDI's in independents trophy
With SEAT and Lada retiring from the WTCC as official works teams and a couple of new teams entering the series without official manufacturer backing, it looked like there would be a lot of drivers eligible for the Yokohama Independents Trophy.
However, today the FIA announced that no diesel-powered car will be eligible to score points for the independents trophy.
...
http://www.touringcartimes.com/article.php?id=4474

IMO a good decision.

Quote:
FIA WTCC promoter KSO has launched the new WTCC Rookie Challenge.
All the drivers who entered in the championship’s full season for the first time are eligible for the Challenge: Norbert Michelisz, Michel Nykjær, Fredy Barth, Harry Vaulkhard, Darryl O’Young and Mehdi Bennani.

Points will be awarded according to the following scale:
1st: 10 points; 2nd: 8 pts; 3rd: 6 pts; 4th: 5 pts; 5th: 4 pts; 6th: 3 pts; 7th: 2 pts; 8th: 1 points.

The winner of the Rookie Challenge will be awarded with a trophy during the traditional end of season party at Macau.
“We have a number of young drivers who joined the championship this year for the whole season and this gave us the idea to establish this Rookie Challenge to encourage and reward the new competitors,” KSO General Manager Marcello Lotti explained.
Source: pr WTCC

Strang they use for this a different points system.

All the WTCC points are strange this year.

Main championship uses the new F1-style 25-18-15 points for the top ten but only the top 8 get revised on the grid for race 2.
Indies still use the old 10-8-6 points for the top eight plus whatever they score in the main championship (using 25-18-15).
Rookie Cup uses the old 10-8-6 points for top eight.

Cray supercomputer on standby, and that's before we get to the weight compensation calculations again.

Maybe because of O'Young? First time in a FWD race car, already fastest of the independents! Hope he and Michelisz can keep up the pace.

I have exactly the same feelings. O'Young is a valuable addition to the field. He's a decent driver, besides the series is called World Championship, so it should be more non-European drivers out there.

at least practise has finished now for these cars (delayed by 15 minutes due to a support race practise car hitting the barriers at the wrong time and that forced the FIA to repair)

I personally don't rate Vaulkhard at all either after his ridiculously erratic driving in the BTCC last year, which cost him some good results. But they're fastest of the independents already and judging from his speed in practice O'Young could be a real talent. So they defintely have a place in the WTCC.

As opposed to all the other newbies that for some reason (magic?) knows the track?

And WOW, Go Norbert Go! Top TDI, beating out all the previous SEAT work drivers + Coronel. That's impressive.

I honnestly was surprised noone took a Lacetti to WTCC already last year. It definitly is a top end car with loads of data available for the WTCC tracks. Some decent driver talent and good engineering work and I would not be surprised if we see 1 of the Bamboo cars on the podium this season.
