Well, extending the calendar later in the year means competing with NFL and other motorsports. By January, college football is mostly done, and if the NFL is that scary, start the year with some Saturday races. At least then you're only competing with the NFL, not the NFL plus other motorsports.

Hell, schedule those races in place like new Orleans, and Florida, where the local NFL teams seasons are long done by then anyway.

I've got nothing against having the schedule run later into Autumn. It's a bigger hurdle to have it trying to start fresh against the NFL reaching a fever-pitch heading to the Super Bowl.

Even I am not automatically keen on more street circuits right now, and where else is IndyCar going to run down there that time of year? Unless things have changed, we learned NOLA can't be counted on the pay all the relevant parties. Also, Homestead is a high-banked, 1.5-mile oval at least as prone to the hazards of pack racing as Texas, perhaps even more so. In addition, the last two iterations of Miami (2002, 2003) and the 1991 version of the New Orleans street circuit were especially bad, even among street circuits. The 1992-95 New Orleans course was better, but not great, and the smaller loop of it was still fairly tight and fiddly.

If the calendar were extended to the first weekend of October, that's only week 5 of an 18 week NFL season. As for competing with other motorsport series, I don't see that as an issue. I think motorsports fans would relish it, I know I certainly would.

New Orleans didn't work out too well last time and there's no guarantee the Saints, Dolphins or Buccaneers won't make the playoffs. If St. Pete could be moved to the beginning of March, rather than the middle, I think that would make a difference.
