Is Penske pulling out of LeMans enough for Porsche to cancel their contract? LeMans is everything for Porsche!
It's Porsche who decide where they race, not Penske.

I agree entirely, but it isn't the best situation for Porsche to have spent the last year preparing for Le Mans only to have the team drop out just a few months beforehand.

I guess I assumed that in the Penske contract was an appearance at LeMans 2007 to attempt to take the P2 crown from RML. It might be Porsche's decision to race, but without the Penske experience and data from the ALMS they're behind the 8 ball.

Penske haven't pulled out, Porsche didn't want to race at Le Mans as a factory (Penske) team, at least in 2007.

Who's the driver in this footage? The helmet looks a bit like an old Romain Dumas helmet from prior to his prototype drive this year. I thought it was interesting that it didn't seem to be Sascha or Lucas in the car.

I don't the ACO would have been particularly happy with a factory LMP2 team either.

Just because Penske arent racing at Le Mans with the Porsche it doesent mean that there wont be a works Porsche spyder at Le Mans. The Spyders racing in the LMS, do any of them have factory backing in the way Penske does? If so theres a good chance one of these teams may enter instead.

Works teams are coming to LMP2 whether we like it or not, Mazda has said recently that they will be increasing their commitment to the ALMS and providing new chassis for 2007 and perhaps a new engine. That combined with the Penske Porsches means there are effectively 2 works LMP2 teams in the world at the moment and several with works support, Rollcentre being 1 I would imagine.

Aren't Rollcenter now concentrating on moving to LMP1 only - as in other thread?

The RS is a gorgeous looking racer on the road isn't it.

Yep, they are. My mistake. I wonder though if we will see another works Radical squad in the LMS for 2007? Or at least a works supported team.

Rollcentre never was a factory Radical squad, allthough they got the first car and helped building it.
Team Bruichladdich is and has been the factory team, team owner & driver Tim Greaves also being part owner of the Radical company.

Good call. He's been stellar in the current RS Spyder this year so he should be an excellent tester. I guess because the thing's all black they don't need the red to match the paintscheme instead of the blue?!

It may be the LMP2....

or it might be an ethanol-powered GT2 car....

ALMS is allowed to use ethanol fuel next year in the GT classes, and Ethanol is a BIG Rahal sponsor....

There's an interesting interview with Hartmut Kristen on Endurance-Info.com. It would appear (amongst other things) that Porsche are clearly not in favour of the proposed 2010 coupe rule.

The interview is here.

The article is in English by the way.

As a manufacturer, what do you think of the ACO's 2010 regulation which requires LMP1 prototypes to have a roof ?
For everybody who has invested in know-how for open cockpit cars i.e. aerodynamics it means to spend significant money again instead of being able to further extend existing know-how. This has never been positive for any categorie of motorsports.

We'd like to thank Hartmut Kristen, as well as Colas Henckes.

A very polite way of saying, one can not just put a top on an open cockpit car and have it work properly

And this shows Porsche are/were looking at P1. Why give them a reason not to enter the top category?

I am not sure that Porsche wants to go against the Audi's! I am not saying that they can not compete with them. It might not be in their best interest business wise. Porsche A.G. owns 27.4% of VW A.G. and shares cross platforming with it! It would make better business sense, to dominate both prototype classes, than to race against oneself (sort of)!

Why else would Porsche be looking at the rules for P1 then? So they've considered it. And they above anyone else should have a grasp of their marketing and business model.
