Is there a minimum age for this feature? Otherwise I'd say the Jaguar XJ-13
should absolutely be in.
I had the fortune to see and hear it go at the jaguar special event in Belgium in '99,in remembrance of the Jag XK120 which proved to the world's press that it could actually DO 120mph on a closed of highway near Jabbeke. This was in 1949 I believe.
The sound of that V12 I will never forget. And what a beautifull car it is.

Was this engine then used in an Alba to no good effect in 1990?

For those of you who haven't seen it, the list looks like...

McLaren Project6 LMP from 1997/98
Lamorghini Jota from 1995
Aston Martin AMS1 from 2000(?)
Ford C100mk3 (1983)
Volkswagen W12 (bit cheeky as it basically ended up as a Bentley)
Honda NSX GT1 (1996)
TOM's Toyota 023 (1995)
Aston Martin Nimrod C3 (1983)

Quite interesting read on balance.

Aston Martin AMS1? News to me.

As is the McLaren Project 6.

I assume the Volkswagen W12 has nothing to do with the Volkswagen W12 Nardo concept supercar?

No, I think the VW car was going to be an LMP900 - the looks were pretty similar to the Bentley, it must be said...

this was in autosport this week.
The VW that turned into the bently was at first designed with the W8 in mind
But it goes on to say how packaging was awful and the inlet and exhaust manifolds needed extensive redesigning to fit in comfterbly.
I think it said also CofG was really high using this engine too.

It could be the project that saw Michael Cane (EMKA/GTC/etc...) involved, Autosport reported about it, design by Graham Humpries (of Spice fame), mid-engined car...

however I assume they didn't progress further than the planning/design stage. Could it be considered one of the "Sportscars that never raced"?

Was it a GT car or a closed cockpit LMP?

There's a picture of it in the Autosport article - I think they said they would go for the GTS class at LM (which is, of course, GT1 nowadays).

Wish I could see it. All of them in fact. Although I've already seen pictures of the tub and wind tunnel model of the Nimrod NRA C3.

Bit more investigation shows that Tim Sugden drove it and the suspension collapsed as he was going down the Craner Curves, must concentrate the mind I would have thought, failed to set a competitive time!!

Emphatically a fair excuse! One of those situations where you'd be inclined to park the device and want no more to do with it...

Which in retrospect seems to be what happened.

This car used to be exhibited in the Haynes Publishing Motor Museum at Sparkford near Yeovil, UK until a few years ago. Not sure what happened to it but its not there now.

The F3L took part in two more races in 1968, but again its good pace was ruined by reliability issues. For 1969 an open top version was constructed, dubbed P69, which shared P68's cruel faith and never made it to the starting grid of a single race. The coupe covered just 14 laps of racing in 1969; it's engine failed after 14 laps at the BOAC 500 and it was pulled of the grid of the Silverstone Martini Trophy with a misfiring engine. This was a suiting end to the shortlived career of the red and gold racer.

for what I know was never raced, in closed cockpit form...

also I recently recalled about a British GTcar, I remember Autosport (Club section) reported about it, there was even a pic of the apparently finished car, the constructor/driver was (Derek?) Tyndall, mid-emgined, possibly 4WD, peculiar look, it was 1996/97...

from Italy a 3-litre Gp.6, built about 1972-3, inspired by Umberto Maglioli (although I read somewhere that was Claudio Maglioli, of Lancia Fulvia F&M fame...), named the Mystere, power by DFV, funding by domestic appliances manufacturer IGNIS. It was largely based on the Panther Bertone (http://www.enzociliberto.it/aisastor...5/Bertone7.jpg)

some infos about the Mystere and the Panther can be found here: http://72.14.221.104/search?q=cache:...t&ct=clnk&cd=1

sorry, it's in italian...

Yes, national (club) racing, Brian Chatfield being the driver...

however, if I remember well, it was built for use in 1992 FIA Cup for C2 cars, to be used by the megateam of Alan Randall (that didn't show up at all....)

Another one for the pot: Fraser GT, built by Alan Fraser in the late '60s with the intention of running with either a BRM 2 litre V8 or, possibly, an in-house V8 based on two Imp blocks. Unusual suspension set-up: de Dion rear end and beam front axle, idea being to maximise tyre contact patch as tyres were getting wider. Never raced, but photos exist of 'finished' car. Remains sold in auction by Coys about six years ago, I think.

And another.....
In the mid 60's, Enzo Ferrari's small car project, which became known as ASA, built a competition version called the 1000GTC, almost a miniature 250GTO. This raced twice (in the 1965 Trento-Bondone hillclimb and in the 1966 Targa Florio). It also took part in Le Mans qualifying, but didn't start.

There was also a glassfibre bodied spyder built called the Sport Prototipo which only got as far as an unpainted rolling chassis....I believe it still exists today.
Looks very similar to a Ferrari 196SP prototype from the early 60's.

OK, time to take the anorak off.....
