Yeah Biela won the '95 World Cup at Paul Ricard in France.

I think there was meant to be one in '95 but it was canned for some reason. Also, in '89 & '90 was the Donnington 500 winner awarded the TT.

And '97, that was where Aaron Slight raced the Honda and totalled in one of the races.

Yeah Biela won in 95. It was a disaster for everyone in the British series. They thought they would blitz it because they had the best series but Dijon is a track with long sweeping corners and fast straights which favoured runners in the German series. i.e Biela who really was on top form at the time.
Ironically the BMW teams which was diabolical in the U.k and struggling in Germany was the next best car to have .
Yvan Muller who was a BMW runner at the time grabbed two poles and Steve Soper who was running in the Japanese series was awarded runner up.

The Vauxhalls, Opels, Fords and Renaults that had been the norm of the year engauged a demolition derby among themselves in midfield.

Yeah, at Ricard, as Alesi95 said, the long corners destroyed the front wheel drive cars and really allowed the 4WD and rear-wheel drive cars to pull away.

Yeah, front wheel drive wasn't the thing to have that day, the only FWD car that showed up really well was Kelvin Burt in the Ford, who did a great job, apart from that, Germany ruled.

The 1997 TT entry list- an interesting mix of BTCC regulars, visiting internationals and one-off drives:

2x Renault- Menu & Plato
3x Audi- Biela & Bintcliffe, plus a third car (the 2wd car from the German STW-Cup for Yvan Muller)
2x Volvo- Rydell & Armin Hahne
3x Nissan- Reid, Leslie & Paula Cook(!)
1x Vauxhall- Cleland (the team had recently been to Bathurst so only ran a single car- Peugeot pulled their entries for the same rason- possibly they hadn't got the cars back from Australia in time...
2x Ford- Radisich & Hoy
2x Honda- Aaron Slight & Jonny Kane
2x Abt Sportsline Audi from the STW Cup- Christian Abt & Kris Nissen
1x Mint Motorsport Cavalier- Tim Sugden
1x Team Dynamics Mondeo -Matt Neal
1x Team Dynamics Nissan- Kari Makinen (the ex-Rouse 1996 car Matt Neal used in the later part of the 97 BTCC- they'd sold it to Makinen

1x Vectra GT (Cavalier)- Tord Linnerud- may have been run by Brunstedt's team?

I think it had a poor entry list. Most teams were running at the new Super touring Bathurst event and couldn't get back in time.

Yeah, besides, it wouldn't be worth the money they would spend to bring the cars to another race. To the independent teams it was probably impossible.

Wasn't the TT the one where they had a 2 sprint race format with the 2nd race grid being decided on a reverse system? It was very cool to have cars race internationally. Though I think France was the most international of all races in terms of national teams showing up?

Kmchow you're probably right. In my Autosport yearly book from 1995, it shows at least 40 cars lined up at Paul Ricard for the World Cup race.

Anybody happen to have the issue of Autosport in which this race was covered? This race or the BTCC finale of '92? Does any literature on it exist at all? It doesn't feature in the Official 1992 Year Book. Cheers!

Menu won the 1997 tourist trophy if anyones interested, i think the btcc masters is a good substitute for the tourist trophy / toca shootout, i reckon it'll run every other year,

Biela won the 1995 World Cup in the Audi Quattro A4 at Paul Ricard.

That was the last time the World Cup ran, but every year there was 'meant' to be a race.

1996 - Early in the piece said to be in the USA, but entry would be based on championship finishing positions (Top 5?) in national Super Touring Championships, rather than country nominations.

1997 - South Africa

1998 - Helsinki Street Race

1999 - Bathurst 1000 Super Touring race.

Wasn't heard of again after that, and by then anyway Super Touring was in decline.

Slight also drove in a couple of the old Liquor King/Drivesafe 500s at Pukekohe a few years back, and had spoken of a desire to race at Bathurst.

Neil Adams - Apart from the one-off World Touring Car Championship in 1987, the only 'international' Touring Car races between the end of the European Touring Car Championship in 1988 and the first FIA Touring Car World Cup in 1993 would be the Nissan-Mobil 500 series races in New Zealand which attracted the likes of Schnitzer BMWs to do battle against the Aussies, and the Fuji 500 in Japan.

The likes of Eggenberger and Wolf Racing (from 1988-1990) with their Sierra's kept having a few cracks at Bathurst until Group A was done away with in Australia at the end of the 1992 competition year.

- Chris Rea raced one of the Private BMWs in the 1993 Toca Shootout, didnt do very well, nor did Derek Warwick in one of the Toyotas, which got totally slaughterd
