this year Ford experimented with 4x4 Mondeo but those were total failures why Roland Asch in a normal FWD Mondeo delivered the goods
According tot Super Touring Register these 4x4 cars were built by Ford Racing and entered by Schubel.

The Asch Mondeo built and entered by Eggenberger.

Built by Ford Racing was in reality Schubel or was it Ford in Cologne?

Shame Mercedes never entered super touring.

the closest thing to that was this converted ex Group A 190 in 1995 Australia with NOKIA sponsorship which did a few races

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Trr4RlHKMM

Nissan also experimented in 1995 STW with 4WD Primera and it was a total failure too

yes Team Schübel was in charge of the 4WD program while Eggenberger used the FWD one, there was also Team Wolf but they were more privateer

for 1996 season Ford ditched the 4WD program and had just Schübel run 2 works FWD cars (with bad results, car was outdated by now) while in second season half Team Wolf entered with 2 FWD Mondeos as privateers

after that Ford never apperead again in STW grid , also think the last time Eggenberger appeared in any series

There have been two mythical Merc Supertouring projects that I have heard mention of years ago. One built by Dynamics and one by Prodrive. Both vetoed by Mercedes and apparently bought and crushed by them before ever seeing the light of day. Indeed there was talk in Ireland of a Merc BTCC project very recently that came to nothing for similar reasons

IIRC, the Prodrive Merc was fully backed by AMG, with drivers on board ready to run too (Tim Sugden and Bernd Schneider). But Mercedes pulled out of the plan late.

Weird to see the Mercedes.

Interesting to see different projects but from manufacturers point of view it makes more sense to put all funding in one project.

Alfa Romeo did both Super Tourers and DTM Class 1 at same time

Opel/ Vauxhall did same

only Mercedes were riding the high horses and dunno why was such an issue as BMW and Audi also run Super tourers and they are in same premium segment

Intended to run late 1993, and then a full season effort in 1994.

I had it on fairly good authority (the Merc motorsport press guy) that AMG were not that keen on Class 2 but were seriously considering entering the new C Class C180 in 1995 but only if there was a European or World series.
A domestic only programme below Class 1 was not attractive.

1995 STW Salzburgring

a grid of 29 starters , BMW got a 25 KG weight reduction ( and some development) immediately showed 1-2-3-4 , Audi was hopeless on this track

starts at 19.25 , some nice onboards too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFNEDfdjifA

also the first STW race for a certain Steve Soper

well the STW was probably 2nd only to BTCC in terms of super touring awesomeness

there were less manufacturers but actually more works cars on the grid and more privateers than BTCC,

1995 JTCC also seemed were competitive and well supported , looking forward when YT finally introduces automated translations... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ktw...0xXZxk2PQY70Zy

some works BMW and Cavaliers but lots of japanese cars Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda

Now that we're talking about super touring, this was the first race of the South American Super Touring Championship, aka "La copa de las naciones", during the weekend of the 1997 Bs. As. Grand Prix.
The damage of Di Palma's Peugeot is always on my mind, it was really weird to that to happen and not losing the floor altogether.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVQ2i8MTIpE

As a side note, this wasn't a points race because some of the cars were fresh from the boats/customs and the Pugs (attended by Edgardo Fernandez) didn't have the 18'' wheels, and by extention, the reglamentary tyres for the race.

Thruxton is often vilified for producing boring touring car racing these days. This video seems to suggest that it is the modern day touring cars that are the problem rather than the circuit.

The debate is not for here, but people needs to undestand that the teams undestand a lot more on the technical side than some years ago, what works is known, so everyone goes there, its the natural thing to do.
