Perkins Jr to make V8 Supercar debut at Australian Grand Prix

Murphy sidelined by Clipsal carnage; HRT and Supercheap Auto wheel out spares for AGP; Autobarn’s Owen recovered and odds-on to return

JACK Perkins, the son of six-time Bathurst champion and Jack Daniel’s Racing team owner Larry Perkins, will make his main series V8 Supercar debut in the Panasonic V8 Supercar races at this weekend’s Foster’s Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Perkins Jr will fill the franchise slot usually used by Supercheap Auto Racing’s Greg Murphy, whose Commodore was too badly damaged in Adelaide to be repaired in time for this weekend.

Perkins, 19, made his V8 Supercar debut last weekend in the V8 Development Series in Adelaide, and will drive his regular Perkins Motorsport Commodore VZ, which will be serviced by the Supercheap team and carry the #51 plate usually used by Murphy.

Murphy’s team-mate Cameron McConville will drive the team’s spare car in Melbourne, while the team will focus on rebuilding Murphy’s chassis for the next series round in New Zealand, leaving McConville to drive the spare until his car can be repaired.

The last 24 hours have been hectic for Perkins, who was going to be a spectator this weekend and was today at the team’s workshop helping prepare the car.

i think the reson mconville is racing the spare car is because murphy had a strained neck from the crash.

I cannot imagine that Spud would be too pleased about this, in much the same way that SCAR were not too pleased with his kamikaze effort at the weekend. Perhaps this is the start of a falling out between the two parties which could see Spud joining Daddy's team in 2007 ?!?!

Is Murf physically able to drive at the AGP? Perhaps there is an injury there nobody is talking about.. he didntget out of the car too easily after the crash.. and needed Skaife to help him..

Why they would choose Jack-O-Lantern when Shane Price was quicker in Adelaide is an interesting discussion point

You arent wrong there!! I find it hard to believe someone can come back from such a huge temp spike to be ready to drive this week.

There is another driver on standby..

You wouldnt think so, or otherwise the hothead himself would be driving.. and wreck one of Larry's chassis instead of wrecking one of his fine engines..

I wonder how many who make the comments have experienced a high speed shunt and have any idea of the strains and stresses on the human body.

But if you are on Playstation then you can recover just as quick as you can open another beer. Also your car has the ability to rebuild it's self all by it's self. No work or effort required by anyone, now isn't that just magic.

I agree with your comments on Street circuits, the reasons why they were canned throughout most of the world in the late 1960's and early 1970's haven't really changed have they?

Except Monaco.

I have escaped a high speed shunt.. on a highway.. with me passengering.. the very expensive luxury Toyota (read: LS400 Lexus) was categorically totalled when the driver lost control in the wet, and a tree visited our front end. On my side!

Gotta love the use of airbags, ABS, and all that modern paraphernalia when the car meets an inanimate object... all these things a Supercar doesnt have.

We survived, stiff necks, sore backs, tired, thirsty, and stuck in the middle of nowhere.. without mobile reception. The Lexus.. well she burned to the ground, a broken fuel line igniting and making french toast of our beige coloured transport.

How lucky were all of these drivers to not get incinerated in their cars. Could easily have happened...

Jack is barely ready for a Development Series drive, but this will make him look utterly ridiculous. I can't see how something like this will help his career at all.

Oh well, it will take the heat of Steven Johnson for one weekend at least.........

Interesting that they picked Perkins over Price, heres what they did on the weekend in Adelaide:
P1
9th - 1.27.45 - Shane Price
17th - 1.29.01 - Jack Perkins

P2
13th - 1.27.86 - Jack Perkins
15th - 1.27.91 - Shane Price

Qual
17th - 1.25.86 - Shane Price
19th - 1.25.92 - Jack Perkins

R1
10th - Shane Price - 1.26.35 (FL)
27th - Jack Perkins - 1.26.86 (FL)

R2
6th - Shane Price - 1.25.68 (FL)
10th - Jack Perkins - 1.25.59 (FL)

Both relatively similar but Price clearly got up to speed faster and was faster in all sessions except for P2 and R2.

I would be very surprised if one of the big names, ie. Murphy, was to sit out a round for any reason other than medical; even if it is a non championship round.

i agree.i think it would be his neck because the footage shown on 10 where the medical staff were checking him and skaife out they seemed to be very interested in murphy's neck.when they did the round report posted on the v8 website murphy was unavalable for comment and i heard that was because of medical reasons.

Not too many out there want to remark on his performance over the weekend!

Qaulified ahead of several series regulars, finished ahead of a couple of them in all races, kept his nose clean and came home with a straight car.

I would have thought he achieved every goal for the weekend.

He obviously kept out of trouble, was able to have 3 starts and get plenty of miles under his belt. Me thinks he achieved a great deal. Can't get experience like that in private testing. Well done, at least he had a go.
