AFL star tries his hand in the Mini Challenge
I see Jason Akermanis in a Mini in Tassie this weekend - for non AFL types he played in 3 premierships with Brisbane, won a Brownlow Medal (B& F for the comp) & now plays in Melbourne for the Western Bulldogs.
A motor mouth on most subjects Aker will generate extra press down in AFL following Tassie - more bums on seats cant be a bad thing. Quicker in qualifying than earlier practice. Has he done any other competition work? |

I saw this on ten news last night and had a chuckle. I'm not sure if he's raced in other categories, he has tested a V8 Supercar and has done some trackdays on his motorbike thats all I know.
Interesting to see how he goes in the race though. He's got the competitive spirit though which can only be a good thing. |

Also some bloke called Stuart Appleby, who apparantly hails from a dairy farm in Cohuna, and hits a golf ball for a living, is having a steer too.

On a slightly different tact, is there likely to be a Mini Challenge in 2009?

Didnt a Rugby player have a very similar accident in Minis??
Might be more beneficial to get racers into the class don't you think? |

Presumably a very expensive write off... on the warm up lap... likely flapping his gums and not taking not of the road in front.
Not clever. Good that he isnt hurt, but Motorline Mini wouldnt be too impressed |

Good that he's not hurt, that's the main thing.
Having said that, bloody hilarious! |

Ben Tune (former Wallaby Winger) broke his leg at Barbagallo. And it might be more beneficial to wind the whole thing up and concentrate on something else. Get these guys in proddy's or something. |

Leave meat heads where they belong- the footy feild. And rev heads where they belong- the race track. Rare exceptions, but that's how it is.

I still wonder how someone becomes a 'uber star' driver... I mean just because they may have participated in celebrity challenges, and told everyone how fast they drive their toys... shouldnt really get them a CAMS licence of the class to participate at a national meeting..... should it?

I know in my car club it takes quite a while to get up to speed. Starting off on road tyres, then R spec tyres and then slicks. Or you can start off in karts and go that way if you are a bit more serious. Not sure what this bloke's path was, but you don't get there over a weekend or two. As an official, I have seen inexperienced drivers perform some quite dangeous manouevres that are bad enough at club level- unforgiveable at a national level.
Of course, it is quite possible he has had some experience prior to this in other forms of motorsport. Quote:

Well, assuming its not the hire karts that is a lot better than just fronting up with no experience. However, it seems he is probably in a bit over his head at this stage.

Well we are talking about a guy who does a backflip after each footy victory and some things just come natural.

Might save Kimmy a bob or two in panels then... that son of his is a bit too excitable in a race car and has a bit of habit of throwing the car at imoveable objects, ie walls, fences, other cars, the ground, tyre barriers etc etc. If he had have got it in the air any higher at PI he would have needed to lodge a flight plan first with CASA.
