Weber Carburettor Fire.

I've not had a good day today and one or more of my Weber carbs set on fire due to petrol and or oil blowing back through one or more of them. The fire wasn't major but was burning for a minute or two before I realised what was going on. My new ITG filter is no more but I was wondering if I need strip the carbs and if there are any seals that could be meltable on them. Are there any spindle seals, what are they made of and do they burn, or anything else for that matter?

Just give it a clean up Tim,shouldn't need any more than that.Quite a common trick from SD Webbers.

Funnily I was just thinking today about an old DCNF Weber I had which had a press fitted fuel barb. It fell out one day spewing fuel all over the turbo manifold beneath it. Still amazed it never caught fire!

Seen a few fires in my time around Escorts of this happening, fuel straight onto exhaust manifolds. Onto a turbo and not catching on fire is a miracle.

The fact that you got the fire out quickly normally means that they will be OK as they are a simple designed uncomplicated carb and setting the filter alight is nothing new, especially the foam ones as they are always impregnated with petrol because of the overlap on race cams, and when the carb spits back BINGO !

might be a good opportunity to triple check the floats are moving freely and not touching anything, ie they have the opportunity to get stuck, personally I think foam filters are a fire hazard in their own right.
