But aren't we now staring at a number of teams handing in RECs anyway? If GTR's mail is right, maybe a field as low as 20 for next year, isn't that what we were facing before Supercars sold the farm to Fox?

Which may have been a catalyst to make some real changes to the operating costs rather than propping up the series until the next TV negotiation.

Let's face it, all it really did was dig a bigger hole for the series to climb out of once the deal is over. An awful strategic blunder.

Fascinating! Bye bye A-League, by the look of things.

The greater risk assessment that many of these executives probably won't look at is what are the ramifications for not owning the sports rights.

Australia, like New Zealand, is miles behind the 8 Ball in terms of internet capacity and technology. In New Zealand, we have seen the rights to F1 and support races move from Sky Television to Spark Sport, a new division set up by what was Telecom here, as they divest into wider revenue streams on the back of diminishing revenues.

In F1 alone, we have seen a number of teething troubles. Spark Sport have the rights to broadcast the Rugby World Cup later this year and about 10-15% of the population won't have internet fast enough to stream in any capacity or in decent capacity - that is, a download of 10 MBps.

At a time like this, with a technology shift, we have never so many sporting codes so vulnerable as their broadcast rights revenue has been the basis for many. This poses to be the biggest upheaval since the end of tobacco sponsorship.

Crazy to think that those on the PayTV teet were proclaiming paytv to be the future and audiences needed to adapt their expectations - all the while Foxtel was losing $417 million per year!

If I were in Supercars management, I'd be considering my options, cozying up to every free to air network manager possible.

I really hope we don't go back to a FTA as the first & main provider.. Foxtel was the best thing to happen to Supercars!

The problem is, that's for existing fans. But if it's not FTA, how do you pick up new fans, or casual watchers who'll leave it on if it's on, but won't go looking for it and especially not sign up for it?

I hate to think how many ads would get thrown in there if it all goes back to fta

leader is just about to pit at Bathurst... time for an ad break

Was it? Less cars on the grid and less manufacturers involved today than there was in 2014 on FTA

No more than 15mins of ads per hour on average, just as the law has been for donkeys....

....People seem to forget that Channel 7 carried the last hour of the 2014 Supercheap Auto 1000 ad-free as well

One big impact will be the selling value just went down the gurglar. I would not be surprised to see some activity in that area before things get too dire.

There are too many outs of this. Anything "integrated" into the broadcast - competitions, internal program promotions, live crosses to network "stars", lower thirds stuck over the show.

Self-regulated TV industry **** in its own nest and for what its worth, you don't get all that bullshit on Foxtel.

The reality is lots of stuff that should be counted in the 15 minutes isn't, because the lunatics run the asylum.

Interesting to hear Mr Cochrane’s thoughts on Mr Ingall’s videocast.
The focus on the fan, and not allowing a fan to have an excuse to say ‘no’ because there isn’t a way to watch on free to air teev...

Bring back TC!!

Ultimately, Supercars could have come to a better compromise with ch10 over a more palatable FTA deal. A simple race-only package might have worked, and ch10 could have done whatever prac/qualy highlights and colour stories on RPM.

But here we are...

Ten/CBS have no interest, they dropped F1 immediately upon the purchase, didn't they? While SC is just seeing through the existing contract.

I was under the impression it was due to Murdoch throwing his toys out of the pram after the creditors favoured CBS over Murdoch/Gordon for the purchase of the network...
