Isn't it French for the Big Prize or Great Prize?

It's French for 'big or great prize'. The first 'Grand Prix' ever held was the French GP in 1906 and for several years it was the only GP. When other countries began to join in they tended to call their race by a similar name except in their own language - Grosser Preis, Gran Primo etc. Perhaps because the British were a bit late on the uptake in this game they adopted the glamorous sounding French version for their GP and the term is normally used in English-speaking countries as well as, of course, France .
