Jersey / Guernsey Hillclimb

Dearest all,

This sudden craze of ten tenths and moorsport news has sent me message happy.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone from the mainland was planning to go to Jersey or Guernsey this year to marshal either of the national rounds.

To the detrimental effect of both of the Channel Islands, I have heard rumours that people have been turned away from both the islands and have heard such quotes as "We are not welcome there" and "Guernsey and Jersey have both said that they do not accept english marshalls".

It is not for me to say if this is the case or not, but one thing I know is that both Islands are always crying out for marshalls and I can be certain that If anyone did want to marshal over there then they certainly would not turn you away. Please PM me if anyone was planning to go to either of these events this year

If that's true then it is very sad. I can say that when I came over last year to deliver some training on Guernsey we were very well received and I have nothing but good memories of both sand racing and karting, and lots of beer!

Not sure if I can make either event but will check. can you remind us of the dates again please.

I was on Holiday in Jersey a couple of years back when they were setting up a hillclimb at Bouley Bay.

I stopped to chat with one of the lads who was putting out bales and tape and he told me I would be more than welcome to help out if I wanted to.

The wife however, reminded me that we were on holiday!

It's a very difficult situation out there. The locals aren't intrinsically unfriendly, in fact when I've been over, it's been overall a positive experience. However, there's no getting around the fact that manning the hills often presents difficulties. Over the years, a number of schemes aimed at resolving the problem have backfired and caused some resentment among some competitors and club members. I've found on my visits that some of the attitudes to marshalling over there have struck me as strange. But, after some closer investigation, there are generally well founded reasons for them. The upshot being that mainland marshals are welcome, but they should mindful that local sensitivities to various topics surrounding marshalling, are quite raw nerves still.

I've been a couple of times to Bouley bay and Val de terres and been made very welcome.
But as Al says they do things there way and if you go with the flow you'll have a great time.

Signed,

As Rescue Due says we have always been welcomed on both Isands. The Jaffa Cakes kept us going on Guernsey and on the way home.

Dates

The dates for the Jersey / Guernsey Hillclimb this year are as follows

Jersey: 13th July 2006

Guernsey: 15th July 2006

If you need anymore details please PM me.

If anyone was interested in coming to Guernsey then I know that there should not be a problem with putting people up so as to make the cost of it all alot cheaper.
