Yoong Montoya should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Why 10 points for a win?

The old scoring system was 9-6-4-3-2-1 but then they awarded 10 points for a win. Why is this? I think it was better the other way. 4 points between 1st and 2nd is too much I think and it too easly allows the championship to be clinched too early in the season?

Another thing that could make things more interesting is if the points were spread among the top ten. It would make the midfield battle more interesting too.

DNQ should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I have always said I'd prefer a different points system, but I have changed my mind in recent months. The 10-6-4-3-2-1 system gives the midfielders something to fight for...if you're in 7th place, it really gives you something to fight for, and makes the points seem so more important.

Regarding the change of value for a win, I believe that was implemented in the late 80's to reward speed rather than consistency.

I think 10-6-4-3-2-1 is a sensible and good way of point scoring.

I think it was only 8 points for a win in the very early days, but don't quote me. 10 is a nice round figure and gives the incentive to risk second on a 50/50 move

It used to be 9 points for a win up until 1990 , but that was when you could drop your worst 4 scores as well .

Yeah. The F1 system is really the only motor racing scoring that rewards winning over consistency, and that to me is a good thing.

You are correct - it was changed to 9 points in the early 80's IIRC, then 10 in 1990 as posted earlier. Each time it was to encourage the second-place driver to be less conservative.

There was also a point for fastest lap way back then...

When I started following, it was 9 points for a win-that's from the late 60's. I believe the change was made when the point for fastest lap was dropped in 1959.

In 1990, the tenth point was added for First Place in order to give a greater reward for a victory.
