MSA rebranding

So - will this improve the sport.......

"Today marks the start of an ambitious new phase for motorsport in the United Kingdom, with the Motor Sports Association (MSA) launching a new identity, Motorsport UK, as it transitions from a traditional governance-led association to a modern membership-focused organisation."

Mmm, how come we have to learn about it via YouTube.

Obviously it will result in more common sense being applied to rules and regulations, cheaper licences for competitors.......

I thought there are already a number of organisations known as Motorsport UK - or something very similar.

Not so many known as MSA.

Are they trying to create confusing and obfuscation?

Still, nice to know that it is transitioning. That should get it some publicity.

Nice that it wants to 'identify' as a membership-'focused' organisation.

Has the management been taken over by consultants?

Just the start,, lots more changes in the next 12 months, maybe including a move

So how many tens of thousands of pounds will that cost? I would have thought with falling numbers of competition licences the MSA would have far more to worry about than a ridiculous rebranding. And what a load of rubbish jargon it uses. Of course the MSA is a traditional governance led association and that's what it should stay. Next they'll be calling us 'customers'. It's only a membership focused organisation because we have to be members if we want to compete. There's no choice about that.

Oh dear, there was me thinking that Dave Richards was going to bring some dynamic thinking to the MSA.

To be fair, there is some suggestion that Dave Richards has had some beneficial impact - the small degree of relaxation of some of the "lifing" rules, for example....

I guess with this we'll just have to wait and see......I've just been testing and the website addresses are changing to motorsportsuk.org - or at least some have....

Well, from my world Dave Richards is really kicking some ass.

The top level karting championship has traditionally been a franchise called Super 1. We've raced in it for the past three years and it's become complacent, expensive and sucking money from the sport. IMHO of course.

All of a sudden Super 1 is history. Toast. Karting UK is a branch of the former MSA and is taking over the running of the British Championship. There's big money investment in the circuits that host the BC rounds, coming from KUK, which will benefit grass roots karting. The BC rounds are going to smaller circuits not just the cosy monopoly of the biggest venues like people suspected.

Karting UK has also recognised its customers come from A&D karting centres and its web site reaches out to them, saying new drivers.should start there. TBH that's brilliant for me because a lot of my customers come from A&D too and for the governing body to join the dots is unheard of.

Being karting, just like on here, people are moaning - cost of the rebrand, don't like what they're doing etc. FFS, for years we've said "somebody should do something about it." Well, now someone IS trying to do something about it. Let's give them a chance, it may just work?

I'm excited.

I had occasion to ring the MS... sorry - Motorsport UK this morning and the rebranding has certainly happened in terms of the phone messages. Morninggents will be pleased to hear that we're not "customers" but "members".

Can’t see the point of a rebrand but I’ve only heard good things about how Dave Richards has shaken things up a bit. Certainly sounds like he’s intending to focus on grassroots stuff, and the video seems to support that.

Guess what! Email now received announcing the change.....

I have to agree with the impression that DR is trying to get ‘grass roots’ motorsport rejuvenated, and that is definitely to be applauded. We also need more common sense rule changes to save costs, such as the ‘life extensions’ mentioned recently. That could be taken further, IMHO.....

Life extensions?

Is that being able to renew a license after a lapsed period without having to start all over again. That would be beneficial to those who are taking time out due to work/family and coming back into the sport.

Life extensions is about belts and seats, rather than insisting they’re in date.

Worth contacting them about reviewing license requirements. Plenty of us moan about the MSA*, myself included, but few of us put pen to paper as it were and lobby for change. Of course there’s no guarantee that it’ll have any effect, but still worth a try. I’ll shortly be writing a letter addressed to Mr Richards highlighting the hoops we’ve had to jump through to get a car that’s used in a national race series approved for hillclimbs.

*thats a habit I won’t break easily, to my mind the MSA govern motorsport and Motorsport UK is a TV programme that shows BTCC support races.

Depends how long you've been out......I know after a few years (4 or 5) you might have to sit the ARDS (if you fail this your a nutcase) paper test, but its not too painful. For rallying from what I remember you can just pick up where you left off, or maybe a grade down.

I was just coming here to post the same thing!!! I wonder if I will now have to be a member before I can apply for a licence?

A good start to would be to ditch all the expenditure on their young talent programmes. Not sure how keen I am for a proportion of my fees to be spent helping someone else trying to be an F1 star. Those costs ought to be covered by a levy on the existing stars.

Interestingly, Microsoft Outlook knows more than you think...the email was in the Junk folder

It's difficult to get it right these days. Send out the email first and it's "typical MSA, make these changes but haven't bothered with the website etc. " So they spend time sorting out the online stuff first and it's "typical MSA, why do I have to find on social media first?"

It depends on your age as to which form of notification is your preferred method, I suppose.

Just lately I have been no fan of the MSA and its archaic procedures off and on track. I have been heavily supporting non MSA karting which has a more pragmatic stance. But we do need the consistency of rules that a national governing body can bring. I really want DR to pull all the threads if motor sport together so we don't rush off in different directions.

Let's give it a chance. What I've seen is positive so far and may just work. I hope the wind of change is blowing through the whole organisation. Good luck to MSUK.

Email about 2019 license today mentions ‘member benefits’ so interested to see what that’s about. Suspect it’s just discounts from Demon Tweeks/GPR etc.

I agree with Max - let's give them a chance. It's painfully obvious that motorsport needs to adapt to survive. Maybe we need to put the cynicism to one side for a bit whilst we see how things develop.

I can think of better things to change than the name

Change the rule that you cannot get a promotion to a higher grade licence for a Clerk... unless you officiate at a higher grade meeting....which you cant do ... unless you belong to the "inner circle" of bigger clubs

Change the way that the module training is done (it dates back to the 50's ) for becoming a clerk, put in place exams and tasks that need to assessed and marked etc rather than it being "signed off" in a book that is a photocopy

Help promote younger clubs to get more content by way of younger competitors but more over YOUNGER OFFICIALS... as they are getting fewer and fewer

Changing the name makes it sound like a webpage or a magazine, its not, its supposed to be the organisation responsible for Motorsport governance

Got my licence renewal docs in the post today, with covering note about the changes and stressing that we'll be "members" not just licence holders....

It all sounds very positive, so happy to give it a chance....not that I have much option

Benefits as listed above. Not a great package in my opinion over what is currently available. Also no mention of the increase in licence costs. Why am I not surprised?

Great play has been made on the increases in lifeing of belts and seats for National use. In respect of belts it looks like common sense has prevailed. As regards seats I remember that it was originally possible to extend the homologation, by I believe 2 years, by having the seat checked over and tested by the manufacturer and I had this done by Cobra seats. I believe this was discontinued but I don't know when and why.

I'm hoping for the best but I'm not holding my breath.

Approx 3% increase on my licence cost. £6 or two coffees while out. Luckily I can squeeze another year out of the last SRECG performed. Next renewal will be more expensive!

The speel regarding benefits is just typical PR, but I will be checking out what discount DFDS ferries are offering.....

Off topic, but while reading the link to news I spotted the recent VNUK update, which looks encouraging.
