The issue with closed top is the cockpit's proximity to the rear wing and the potential to disrupt the flow. With rear overhangs limited to a max of 750 mm, this is a more contentious issue than in the past. Previously the rear overhang dimension was free, giving the ability to put the rear wing as far back as needed.

does that mean we are unlikely to see front running LMP1's with closed tops under the current regs? That would be a real shame.

Not necessarily. The wheelbase for an LMP1 can be drawn up long enough to get the wing out far enough. Questions remain for LMP2. As a general rule for them, shorter engines, shorter wheelbase, therefore the wing would be closer to the cockpit despite having it at the maximum 750 rear overhang.

Shocker of a name though! Sounds like my cat vomitting.

Not very impressive renders really. I agree about the R8 and Gt-One statement. Everyone's a genius with the software, copying and pasting, few come up with anything original.

It would be nice to see some proper hand drawn renders for once, or some sketches, so we can see the origins of the concept.

So they are intending to build an open top LMP2 first , to debut at Sebring next year ?

Question ..... do the rules allow a closed top LMP2 ?

Nice looking car

Yes, the rules allow a closed top LMP, but you have to cope with the extra weight of the roof and the windshield.

It could well be more expensive and, as Dauer 962 says, you have to find out whether you can cope with the extra weight of the roof and the windshield.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the issue is aero. LMP2 typically means a shorter wheelbase (shorter engine, bellhousing, etc.), and therefore the cockpit is closer to the rear wing and potentially disturbs airflow to it. An LMP1 can get away with it because there is the posibility of running the maximum wheelbase (wheelbase is theoretically free, but if you are running max front and rear overhang [1000 mm and 750 mm respectively] the max wheelbase you can run is 2900 mm for 4650 total length) in order to put the rear wing out as far as possible as that is now the primary device to alter rear wing position as everyone is at the maximm of 750 mm rear overhang. In the past rear wing position was a product of the rear overhang dimension, but with that fixed at 750 mm max (sure you can run less, but I don't think anyone is where as in the past under the free overhang dimension regulations it wasn't unheard of to see 1000+ mm) your only ability to control how far the rear wing is away from airflow distrupting structures is to alter the wheelbase as needed.

But a spacer can be fitted right? Either a long bellhousing or space between the engine and the tub, Ã* la C65? The P1 and P2 Lolas must have the same wheelbase...

And what car will Epsilon be debuting first (at Sebring)? An LMP2, an open P1 or the previously planned closed P1? I'm rather confused... They're talking about a development program with the open car first, but does it mean in the windtunnel or on the track with a complete car?

Also great to read the infos about the bellhousing concept. It seems to make sense, since the actual gearbox is much less stressed and a "chassis"/structure somewhat similar to the front of the tub is used to pickup the suspension and the gearbox... if I get it right.

Still,on odd names, nothing beats the Koenigsegg imho.

Am I glad they took out the sides to make windows in! The design with only the front shield looked plain ugly to me.
And yes, couldn't the ACO just give them an extra 25mm? Just to make the rears of these modern prototypes look gracefull,as the used to do?

The project is still running.
Drawings are ready and they start soon building a model for wind tunnel testing.

They plan to build a closed LMP1.

Planetlemans interviewed Michael Vergers and he said the following:
Quote:
PLM- Michael, will we see you on a closed Barazi LMP1 in the future?

MV- Well, that was an Epsilon Euskadi project which came from the Design Engineering school from the Basque Country. Juan (Barazi) found it too ambitious, you need to put a lot of effort in development, tests and that was not realistic. In fact I don't think it will materialize.

Well in an interview on test day with EI, Michel Lecomte said that Barazi is not the limiting factor in the project and that it is still in progress.
