Best BTCC Driver of the 1990s
Who was the best BTCC driver of the 1990s? All the drivers in the poll had a great deal of success, but which would you say was the best?
I would go with Menu - he was on the pace for so many years and unlucky not to win more championships. |

Dare i say it......even though he got very big headed at times, Menu i think was the best, he had speed, racecraft and the most titles to the decade (does 2000 count in the decade)?

i agree with Menu for overall consistency and race craft and so on, but Rydell is my man...if he wanted to he could blast the field anytime any place. 1998 was such a good year lol!

im going for john cleland, he won two championships although one was in the astra. he was also unlucky not to win the championship in 92, when he was robbed by a dodgy move by steve soper. with paul radisich not far behind. unlucky never to win a championship, and if he had a full season in 93 he might have done.

Gotta agree with Daz about Radisich...He *would* *have* won the championship in 1994 had Alfa not been there.

Gabriele Tarquini. He kept coming back for more (Alfa 95, Honda 97/99/00). Oh, and because of his two wheel driving exploits at the Donington finale in 1994. Plus his Knockhil flying display. But seriously, he had some great drives.

Rydell, Rydell, Rydell, He's always had the speed and the ability to outdrive everyone and stick it on pole/win the race whenever he felt like it. Was unlucky not to win more championships,-the car wasn't as good as it might have been in 97, and reliability and Nissan were the problem in 99.

John Cleland - no doubts!! A total character, the BTCC was a poorer place when John retired. Pity he got saddled with one of the worst super tourers ever. Those Vectra's were total pap. The word passion can be applied to John - in good and not so good ways. Any team which fancies having a long queue at the pit walkabout should get Mr C on their books for next term.

I'd put the good old boys Cleland and Hoy up there as joint number one. Both robbed of the 92 title.
Gabriele deserves a mention as well. A superb driver with a great personality. I don't know why people say he robbed Radisich of the 1994 title. Alfa didn't break any rules. |

For my money, Frank Biela - came, saw and conquered in 1996 and then still managed to be runner-up in '97 despite the BTCC's best efforts to hobble the quattro cars. Doing well for himself in those roofless jobbies now, I hear; three Le Mans wins on the trot, is it?

For sure Menu was quick... But he lacked sportsmanship, and if he was lower down in the field the speed wasn't there...
