Swedish Rally

Well the Swedish Rally is underway and the top 10 at the end of day 1 looks like this:-

1. Marcus Gronholm (Fin) Peugeot 307 WRC 58:20.8
2. Petter Solberg (Nor) Subaru Impreza WRC @ 0.2
3. Sebastien Loeb (Fr) Citroën Xsara WRC @ 10.2
4. Gigi Galli (Ita) Mitsubishi Lancer WRC @ 18.9
5. François Duval (Bel) Citroën Xsara WRC @ 28.0
6. Markko Martin (Est) Peugeot 307 WRC @ 36.9
7. Toni Gardemeister (Fin) Ford Focus WRC @ 57.4
8. Harri Rovanpera (Fin) Mitsubishi Lancer WRC @ 58.3
9. Mattias Ekstroem (Swe) Skoda Fabia WRC @ 1:038
10. Janne Tapio Tuohino (Fin) Skoda Fabia WRC @ 1:07.1

The Mitsubishi's seem to have some speed and Ekstroem is in the top 10 too.

I think the things that have surprised me most are the performance of the Mitsis and Skodas, also the difference in speed between Petter and the other Subarus - that's quite a gap.

When it comes to the Subaru drivers, I think Petter is a different league to Atkinson and Sarrazin who I see are 15th and 16th overall.

Did Marko have problems, because last year he was on the pace.

Remember Luke, that Marko has moved to Peugeot from Ford and I would think that he will still be getting used to the 307, its a different beast to the Focus.

Solberg ahead after day 2 .
Gronholm behind some 12 seconds .
with Loeb around half a minute behind

looking good for Solberg but Loeb to keep his lead in the championship ..

Thanks, good point.

I'm glad the main title challengers are right up there, as Loeb won't have a huge lead in the championship.

Loeb was running on 3 cylinders this evening, the Citroen techies had 45 mins to check it out and they reckon it was a head gaskest problem.

But these 2 drivers are debuting on ice and snow, with Sarrazin traditionally a tarmac boy, and Atkinson a gravel runner.....

Watch for Mr Atkinson on fast, flowing stages on gravel.. Mr Solberg may not see which way he went...

Interesting to see Dave Lapworth proclaiming Chris Atkinson as the star of the rally after the second day of competition.
Good to see him post a string of times in the top 10 while clawing his way up to 9th.
Must have had an off on the last stage as dropped back to 10th overall with a stage time that had him 23rd for the stage.
A few of the more experienced drivers must have done a double take on one of the stages to see him post the 4th quickest time.
I just hope he keeps his head and finishes the final day, not that he is known for falling off the road but you never know.
Sarazin still struggling though in 17th after 2 days. Seems to have settled in to that position after looking at all the stage times for the whole field.

Has it been done before... a rookie WRC pilot sets top 4 stage times, and is still competing in his first rally??
