its been mentioned for a long while now, but i think its been put on the back berner whilst all this international shanghai rubbish.

i think the V8's have more to gain by racing on street circuits in Townsville and Hobart, then racing in Shanghai

Of course this Townsville street race will probably come at the expense of the permanent circuit at Queensland Raceway.......

Unfortunately it looks like if this race goes ahead, QLD Raceway will be on the chopping block.

Tropics Dweller should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has further knowledge of the possibility of the Townsville event actually getting up. As a local there is plenty of gossip going on and the local council have pushed through a motion allocating funding to the tune of $2.68m to the development of the circuit area. The crowd up here in paradise would be enormous. For those who don,t know, the draw area for this event has 720,000 event starved people just waiting to motor in. Any info appreciated as it is a closed shop re this event around town.

For a street circuit perhaps, but Puke and WA are the roughly the same size and provide some of the best racing in the series.

Townsville closes on V8 berth
By Laine Clark
May 24, 2006

TOWNSVILLE is one step closer to becoming a national touring car pit-stop after the Queensland Government announced today that it would study the viability of staging a round in the north Queensland city.

A due diligence study would be conducted with a view to staging a Townsville street race "in the near future", Queensland Minister for Sport Tom Barton said after meeting V8 Supercars Australia chairman Tony Cochrane in North Queensland today
Quote:
"This is the final study to be held to assess the proposal and the outcomes will allow us to make a decision one way or another."

Cochrane said the V8 Supercar round in Townsville, if given the green light, would become an "international event"."

Townsville V8Supercar is going to depend a lot on the forthcoming Rally Australia announcement. The Beattie Government will not be bankrolling three major motorsport events, you can take that to the bank. I get the feeling with Rally Queensland almost upon us, that might be when they make the announcement.

Which do you think has more tourism appeal - V8s in Townsville or WRC on the Sunshine Coast?

THE waiting game to see if Townsville's bid to host a V8 Supercar race in 2007 took a positive turn yesterday with the announcement of a $350,000 study to see if the race was viable.

Sports Minister Tom Barton was in the city to unveil the study, which would include an engineering feasibility report and race precinct design.

The study would look at the economic impact if the event was to go ahead
Quote:
But he would not say if the required facilities could be built in time to stage a three-day race in mid-2007.

I understood the Qld govt would only put money into a Townsville race if the QR paperclip round was retained

I hope the tree-fiddy gorilla's includes a look at the Canberra figures....

And the reasons the ACT government walked away.

Due dilligence, somthing not usually found in Goverment descisions regarding Motorsport events.........

I hope the tree-fiddy gorilla's includes a look at the Adelaides figures....

And the reasons the SA government want more of the same.

Statistically 75% of street races in australia have been succesful and bring great benifits to the community

Pecks: You include the Race of 1000 Years, and any street circuit (of which there were lots) prior to 1985, in that 75%?

Peck, without starting a flame war, lets agree to disagree on the fact that Melbourne is a financial drain (due to Bernie Millionare being so demanding).

Indy & Adelaide (effectively) and Melbourne all began life as other races, not stand alone V8 spectaculars.

Canberra was just that, a stand alone V8 spectacular without other international drawcards and its history is quite clear.

Now in it's defence, it was the wrong time of year, (AVE$CO's fault) and quite frankly, the majority of Canberrans simply couldn't handle the excitment of V8's, and so chose to stay at home with a blanket, a good book and a mug of warm Horlicks.

but lots of things create a financial drain ie old people, wind farms, children but we like to think that the benifits of having them exceed the financial drain (except in the case of wind farms which is just to appease the greenies)

thats why we have the melb GP, the Clipsal, the indy round, hopefully the valley round one day (we tried it with karts)
