Walter Hayes Trophy, Race weekend thread
thats the test day done!
didnt see too many cars with bits missing, biggest plus was the fact that the weather stayed dry, other than a few spots in the final practice. Im not sure what timesheet i have here but im bored so ill put the top 10 up Noel Dunne Nathan Freke Steve Pearce Bob Higgins Steven kane Victor Gibson Paul Dagg David Mayes Peter Daly Stuart Kestenbuam Lee Chatburn Neville Anderson Philip Austin Chris Acton Neil PUrdie Stewart Dell Declan Quigley David Wild Rory Farell Stephen Gibbins Jaap .... Lets hope the weather holds, not sure who was in Steven Kane's car as he's not here untill tomorrow. Good to see Nathan Freke near the top again, fresh engine so fingers crossed on a trouble free weekend. Also interesting to see the unknown quantity with the noisy PR in Neil Purdie 15th (on this timesheet) |

I had an amazing weekend, but after 4 long days and getting home at 1am I need a while to recover!!
I've been around various championships since 01 but the Walter Hayes has to be the one ive enjoyed the most! amazingly close racing with such a friendly atmosphere to go with it. To be involved with 3 drivers, one in last chance, one in the Semi and then one on the podium was something ill never forget. Even though i got soaked many times and my legs feet and shoulders are numb and aching it was a great feeling to see 3rd placed Nathan Freke come from such a low starting position! Well done to James Beckett, all the organisers and especially the marshals for making it happen.. oh and not forgeting the 152 entrants! |

Question: why were Pendlington (#9), Peter Daly (#4) and Leslie (#120) running in the "wrong" heats?
Pendlington was supposed to be in heat 1, Daly in 2 and Leslie in 4. They are all listed as DNS in their proper heats. They ran in heat 4 (Daly, Pendlington) and heat 5 (Leslie). BTW, loved the event too. Well done JEB. |

Eddy,
Somewhat perplexingly (in the opinion of myself and others) they were allowed to compete in later heats due to problems experienced in their own. This despite their being a repechage system on Sunday morning designed exactly for the purpose of giving drivers who suffered misfortune on Saturday the chance to bounce back on Sunday. On the basis of the decision that was made, Kevin Mills (who non-started heat five) had no chance to race later on Saturday, so this was a decision that was rather unfair. I believe that it was the decision of the clerks rather than anyone else. |

I complained, quite politely, that it seemed totally out of keeping with the ethos of the event - and that they had the Last Chances etc. on Sunday just for this purpose.
The CoC, David Scott had already made his decision by then (and was not going to back down) and I'm sure made it for the best reasons. If your car breaks, then why should you get a second chance, which was not allowed to those in later heats? Not right IMO, and cost me and others grid places for the semi, and some poor sods missed out on qualification direct for the semi and consolation because of it and so were penalised by not having a malfunctioning car. Mind you, DALY (who I have no problem with at all) certainly taught me a quick-thinking lesson - one we used to get Dave Connor out in more races on the Sunday morning too - even after they added him to the Last Chance grid they were still one car short and anybody turning up from the 'Storm' would have been in. |

Thanks Ian and John, I was thinking the same. As a former CotC I found this a very strange way of working. Not that I mind for those drivers, but just a bit unfair towards the rest.
What if one of the "allowed in" drivers took somebody off in the wrong heat? I did see some more strange things over the weekend. |
