FIA National Cross Car

Quote:

http://www.fia.com/news/fia-announce...il-decisions-6

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has confirmed the establishment of a National Cross Car project initiated by the ASN Task Force and the Development Department, which aims to implement an affordable Off-Road motor sport discipline/category.

The framework for the project is as follows:

Cross Car (XC) = RWD single seater “buggy type” car, multi tubular steel frame, motorbike engine (capacity: 600cc / 750cc). Low purchasing cost, easy to maintain and low running cost.

Cross Car can be driven on different types of surfaces (gravel, asphalt, ice) and on “easy to construct” facilities.

Cross Car completes the Rally and Off-Road pyramids as an access discipline/category for young people around the world.

In some European countries, Cross Cars (called Cross Kart, Sprint Car or Kart Cross) are already very popular as an affordable Off-Road discipline for drivers of all ages and are used as a natural pathway for young drivers heading for Rally or Rallycross.

Technical Regulations and safety guidelines are currently being finalised by the FIA.
That could be interesting, or scary. How cheap could be a FIA approved off-road buggy?

One wonders how long before this is included on the rx calendar by img and a lower current class is demoted, money spinner in the future I'm sure

They are popular in Scandinavia and an excellent feeder formula.

Would probably replace rwd as that is and always has been a class waiting to be shot dead.

As seen with RX Lites, the problem with a buggy class is the lack of manufacturer support.

Rallying has R1, R2, etc, so manufacturers sell race-ready cars. It's a business and they are in it.

Of course there are buggy manufacturers. But FIA wants manufacturers to be championship sponsors, not suppliers.

They run in Holland too, as sprintcar. Sound is very boring after you've seen them run a couple of times, after that, it gets annoying. On tarmac they're very fast, on the gravel/sand they are fun. Starts are rather dangerous, wheels can lock or touch on which they bounce from each other in quite violent ways.
How fast do they run? 3:24 was the winning time over 5 laps at Valkenswaard in the finals. The fastest SuperNationalPlus was 3:31. And this in a bunch of pipes with a 600cc strapped to it. It's cheap, it's nice to learn off road racing, but it bores me after seen them a couple of years.

Crosskart is very popular in Sweden and Norway. However, things have become somewhat uneven due to wealthy families. The money they spend on crosskarts are ridiculous. Solberg must have laid a small fortune on Oliver's crosskart a few years ago and the Walfridson's aren't that far behind nowadays. A friend told me that those families have ruined the sport to some degree.

If you walk around a paddock at a crosskart race you can notice the difference with some having giant, luxury RVs and others having small or old ones.

The 650's got some incredible speed and are faster than supercars. The Extreme carts are even faster but I haven't seen one on a regular track though. They all pretty much look and sound the same though and the drivers don't differ that much either. It can be boring like rallycrossnl says.

This kind of buggys was invented in France in the 90's, and very popular there, in Spain and Portugal now.

Very cheap and with a big power/weight ratio, very spectacular in autocross in Spain and France, with 20 cars races; and in rallycross in Portugal, due no autocross chship. in that country.

Besides that there are a lot of manufacturers in the 3 countries that makes similar cars... will see which regulations are FIA making...

A typical race in the Autocross Spanish Chship.:

For me, rallycross should be cars!

If they want to use buggy's, make them look like cars...

Those "cars" and the Lites came at a time when Hansen's and Eriksson's kids were getting into rallycross respectively. JRX was a complete failure though and the cars had a price of circa €30,000. Not worth spending really for those bad things.

The Lites are even more extreme and not that similar to a regular car driver wise and not very durable at all, comes at a price of circa €130,000 I think ...

It will be a decision based around someone supplying them and making a bunch out if it, or probably IMG doing so. They are a good starter formula, and I can see the ERX being farmed out with their own supercar, rwd and S1600, and this trash with lites being the support for WRX.

Great idea as long as someone takes on ERX as I would never even attempt to attend WRX events f that were the case lol!

That was the ONLY reason why RX Lites came to be coz Eriksson took it on board knowing he would make millions selling them in the US Sweden and Europe, not because they are a great car as they are plainly not.

No supercars are mid-engined, normally aspirated or anything like the Lites. But hey ho it happens anyway.

For cost reasons I can understand the choice for cross cars but I also prefer real cars. I quite like the French Twingo cup.

Proper bodywork can fix that.

I think that FIA may attempt to convert them into silhouettes.

The Lites are supposed to somewhat resemble supercars and IMO they aren't similar to buggies or crosskarts. OMSE and Avitas began building them on their own initiative as well and it is a private effort without the involvement of any organization. These things will probably differ a lot from the Lites.

'Proper' Bodywork won't do a thing to make it more safe, or they have to build a far larger and heavier tubular framework around it, which will bend on impact though. That would make them 2, 3 or more times more expensive and the weight would double at least too. To fit even an old style and size austin mini or fiat 500/800 silhouette body would require so much tube work it's rediculous. These things are a motorcycle engine, a seat, 4 wheels, 2 shocks, steering wheel, steering rack and a gastank. That's it. The bodywork now hasn't enough room to stick proper sized start numbers on them.
And I very much doubt that the FIA will chance a lot of the nowdays crosskarts technical specifications, they want the champs of some of the countries to be able to run.
