Nissan should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
MST Transponder

We brought our transponder from MST for the 2002 season, is this still valid for 2003 and do we have to pay any additional costs to use it this year ?.

Should still be valid, as long as it is an AMB type 290, and was registered in 2002. I don't think you have to pay a fee this year, but it may be wise to give MST a tinkle and confirm.

apparently no stock at the moment but orders before 28/2 will be at current price and delivered by mid March. there are only two models approved, basically same thing but 1 is battery powered, the other you wire in.

Phew! As long as it turns up before April

What's the deal with mounting them? It says something about on the inner wing. Do they need a clear 'view' of the road surface below?

No. They don't need a clear view of the road, and they can be mounted up to 3-4 metres from the ground. Tests have proved this.

We mount the trannies to the roll cage behind the driver's seat now.

Mounted 3-4 metres from the ground? What do you drive!! Should that be 3/4 metre? Makers recommend 60cm but a lot are mounted on the roll cage like Chris says.
Do need to see the aerial in the track, even if its through the window.

I faxed the order form on Tuesday, got a phone call on Friday because I'd incorrectly entered my card details . The transponder arrived on Saturday!

Job done.

I had also emailed MST previously and they said there would be no problem.

It was the direct power transponder (not the battery one).

Yes it was Tuesday 25th. Did you send a cheque? They might be waiting for that to clear.

Got mine now. They'd lost my order. Then they sent two! Never mind sorted now.
I understand they can be mounted above Fibre glass bodywork but not Carbon or metal. Anybody got experience? Do they 'see' through a FG floorpan for instance?

Hi DSM - Yes the transponders do work OK through fibreglass. That's where mine is mounted.
An interesting aside, whilst talking to the MST timekeepers at Oulton end of last year I was told that they are only using the transponders for car identification, they are NOT using them for timing. (There were 9 of them, I thought these transponders were supposed to reduce the number of people needed ?, apparently all volunteers, they don't get paid)
er now let me see, 6 x sticky numbers @ 50p each = er hang on a bit, oh yeah 3 quid, one transponder that can only be seen by timekeepers not marshals, er 190 quid. mmmm well that seems to me !

I think that's changed this year Tony. I was told that because 2002 was an 'interim' year for transponders, they were only going to be used for IDing the cars, but this year they'll be used for timing. Certainly that seemed to be the case at the Sunbac meeting last weekend. I didn't go around counting heads though

Well at least that makes them a bit more useful. I see the price has come down by about 30 quid this year

It's not quite like that. The actual timing is done by the car breaking a beam. The same system identifies the car by it's transponder, linking its signal with the breaking of the beam.
This is according to MST. I'm not sure what happens if two cars cross the line almost together. As one breaks the beam, the other can't. Presumably it identifies both cars and gives them both the same 'beam break' time!

BTW I understand that the transponder sends a signal as it crosses a strip in the track. to the system that is measuring the timing beam.
Thanks for that Tony. I know where to fit now.

In qualifying, the timing is done just as the transponder crosses the loop - the beam isn't used as far as I'm aware. This means it doesn't matter where you mount the tranny, as it still has to complete the same distance as your competitors, no matter where theirs is mounted.

In the race though, final placings are decided by cars breaking beams of light across the track, but I'd like to know what the arrangement is when more than one (or in our case, several!) cars cross at the same time... Is it done by break of light beam? by transponder? By video evidence? Just how do they award placings in a situation like that?
