I Second that. My ex squeeze, the Mayor of Weston Super Mare's daughter, owned one of these fantastic little beasts. Superbly balanced, insanely willing and an awful amount of fun. Handles almost as well as an MX5, weighs nothing, bullet proof engineering, drinks very little fuel (only a 993cc i believe) and can be purchased for next to nothing.

It ranks right up there with a TVR Chimaera as one of the most fun car's I've ever driven.

Seeing as the Daihatsu is turbo charged would that not put it up a class ?
Into over 1400 ??

I could well be wrong and usually am....

no , because its 993cc +40% for the turbo , just makes it under 1400 ..considering that with extra boost and bulletproof internals , 170 bhp is the max the standard engine can take (allegedly) , making it 200 bhp per ton(ish) , i would say that for A1, that it would be near untouchable

Curious you mention that figure, because that is my current aim. Apparently it is possible with the A14 engine in the B310 to achieve the kind of bhp figure that would (with suitable weight reduction) allow this kind of power to weight ratio. However people are often a bit vauge on the details

Having looked at the Japanese TS-Cup where these things are usually run with the 1500cc engine it seems they are making 162bhp in full race spec.. which on a car that in standard form weigh around 800kg .. So I'm hoping with a bit of jiggery pokery on the 1400 engine and some weight reduction to be getting close to the 200bhp per tonne target. Getting tuning parts is a bit of a pain in the UK though !

Problem is that most people in europe either stick a turbo on, or ditch the standard engine and stick a larger later turbo'd Nissan engine in. Neither of which would be suitable for keeping me in class

But all this is conjecture... because I need to learn to drive the damn thing properly first, all the power in the world won't help if I can't drive a good line!

Mira TRXX might be better still - they're 4WD aren't they?

There's talk of a couple of late model twin cam head that bolt, but not necessarily immediately work, on the A-series engines. I know which heads they are. That'd lift the power output a bit. Nobody has yet to my knowledge has proven them to work, unfortunately.

Yeah there are a few in the works and one or two claimed to have been complete, but then evidence tends to get a bit thin on the ground. A number of 16v heads will bolt up correctly, but then its all about getting the water and oil running in the right places, which is proving tricker than originally thought.

Latest one I've heard of is the head from the Vauxhall XE and/or ecotec will bolt up apparently (!?), so there is potential there DOHC, which would be nice. It is one of my avenues of enquiry for sure.

*edit to correct myself
