Takagi to IRL, At long last

A report in AUTOSPORT this week says Tora Takagi's Toyota backer has placed him in the invisible racing laegue next year, leaving the other 17 CART drivers without any maniacs to fear on the tracks as of next march.

i think Takagi has improved a lot this year, and that statement is a little unfair!

I never thought he was that bad of driver.... Oh wait, I'm thinking of Nakano... He had a few good runs.

Still, he'll be at home with the demolition derbies they run in IRL.

He has generally had less wrecks on ovals, so he may be better suited to the IRL and with a strong engine behind him, he should do alright.

Walker has a IRl team, just no money, so it hasn't made any starts.

Thanks, SeaGreen. I found it confusing as the IRL website listed Walker Racing, but no statistics or driver info.

So Pook has lost another team?

Everyday that passes, that figure of 25 cars is looking less and less likely of happening... should they be paying them more money- we're told that they've got heaps of it...

Certainly not! Remember, Walker is the guy trying to run Reynard in CART at the moment. From what I've heard, Walker may even be considering a second car.

Reports were that Riccardo Zonta was a guest of Walker Racing at Elkhart Lake, with a view to joining the series next year.

You guys are subscribing to the doom & gloom theory. Look a little further than today's rumor. When you consider that T. George is not too sharp and he's swimming with the great white sharks of the racing business and losing money at every venue except the Indy 500, I'd be more inclined to predict the demise of the IRL than CART. If not the IRL, then T. George's IRL for sure. There's a hell'va lot more to this move to the IRL by Toyota and Honda than racing in the IRL. I don't know what's up, but I say something is in the air and it ain't air that T. George can breathe.

I think you're right JC. Lets hope nobody falls for the; run TG out of business by having him spend all his money getting a series going, mash the then IRL into CART, call it something else, take the result public, and run with the money game. We've seen most of this one already.

Funny (not), how so many threads end up on this subject. Sorry! I wish Tora success!

Well, Takagi going to the IRL is no surprise as he's in Toyota's pocket, but at least Walker won't be going anywhere. He's a loyal CART supporter, and hopefully he should be able to get two cars on the grid next year.

It is a shame Tora is leaving because I think he's improved immensely since he joined the CART series. In fact, both he and Nakano have improved drastically, and have set a new benchmark for Japanese drivers in America.

Bring back King Hiro!

I remember the first time I saw him race back in '92- that day I'm certain he had set his auto-gyro to spin...

This sucks , I hope he can be brought back into CART in a few years on driving merit, away from Toyota.

Doesn't really surprise me. Takagi's seat is being paid for by Toyota isn't it?

Also, he will probably stay with Walker, as he will probably just restart his IRL team to run alongside the CART team like it did up until this year.

Hiro! Yeah he rocker, remember Surfers Paradise '92 when he broke his ankle or something and tried to race anyway? Crazy!

Yeah, he forgot to turn or break at the first chicane, snotted the wall at full speed... at the memories!

Also I remember one of the driver's parades when they had the jet flyovers- all of the drivers seemed really focussed, or just waving at the crowd, but not Hiro! Here he is waving his head around searching for these planes which were long gone... needless to say, he retired early with 'contact'

Wait till the season starts guys. I have a feeling that Honda and Toyota are going to turn the IRL into the Indianapolis recievers League ie they are going to send the cost of fielding a competitive team through the roof and Tony's little game is going to be over. Nissan saw the writing on the wall and walked away from the series and Chevy will find the going too tough just as they did in CART. The General doesn't have the stomach for the rich fare that Honda and Toyota do. Once the t'bbaccy money goes the general will be back in CART and 2004/2005 will see the IRL melt down. Indy will remain but not as TG knows it.

I think Takagi isn't particularly a big loss to CART, but Walker would be. 2 CART entries and an IRL entry for Tora looks likely, but we'll see.
