Which hiilclimb / sprint series?

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could recommend a hillclimb / sprint series for a beginner based in Oxford. I will be driving the car I will be competing in to the venues, so the closer the venues to Oxford the better.

Also, while my MSA license (non race national b) is in the post, it would be great to go and spectate at an event to get a feel for how it all works - plus hopefully find a friendly scrutineer to have a quick look at my car, to make sure it complies with the regs. Can anyone recommend a friendly event near(ish) to Oxford taking place soon that would be suitable?

Thanks - might pop down in the afternoon (having my everyday car serviced in the morning). Do I just turn up to spectate, or do I need to put my name down somewhere?

Yep, to spectate just arive and it'll be a small fee for entry.

What kind of car do you have? I'm looking at an Mx5 for this kind of stuff but all the existing owners are pretty clingy to their perceived resale value.

I have a reasonably modified Toyota Celica GT-Four (st165) which is a 2 litre turbo with 4wd. Should come under the road going production class I think.

Are you talking about a ready prepped MX5? I have seen early road cars on sale for less than 1K.

No, not race prepped, just something with MOT that's nice and reliable and probably fit a rollover hoop at some stage. I'm a bit dubious of the real cheap ones. I'm happy to spend a little bit but mostly they seem to be owned by pregnant women who think they're worth the same as they were when they bought it 3-4 years ago.

So long as the tyres are in List 1A of the Blue Book and you haven't overly modified it then it should be in the Over 2 litre Road Modified Class.

As for the MX5 that ZAC510 is looking for I would try something else rather than the MX5 as it is a tad overweight for Speed Events. It is fine when in a one-make championship but you will be up against a lot lighter cars with probably more grunt.

Dependant on budget a 1.9 Peugeot 205 GTi might be a better bet. At Croft on Easter Monday such xars came 1st & 2nd in the 1400 to 2000 Road Modified class.

Thats the class I meant

The car is currently on Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres, which I believe are in the blue book.

My car's mods are as follows:

Engine bay:

Hybrid Turbo
Metal head gasket
Aluminium Radiator
Oil filter relocation
Downpipe and exhaust
Electronic boost controller
K&N panel filter

Suspension:

Standard dampers, uprated springs (Thinking about a set of coilovers)
Camber bolts

Brakes:

AP Racing four pots at the front

Interior:

Standard except for steering wheel and shifter



I think all these mods are allowed in the road modified class. Just need to add a timing strut

A mix of 20 hills and sprints, and even a class for MX5's!

I'm competing in the sprint at Combe on Saturday in a rapid Ford Puma. Its the 1st round of the ASWMC sprint championship (http://www.aswmc.org.uk/sprint.htm) and their regs are more relaxed so you can run 1B tyres in all classes - even standard production classes
