Compacting Carbon Fibre

Hi, comments and thoughts sought

The F1 tech regulations state that the rear wing elements can move by no more than 1cm when a certain weight is pressed upon them (I'm pretty sure thats how I understand it).

Would it be possible to place a thin lining between the carbon fibre sheets to make it compact for a high top speed, and to expand at slower speeds to create higher downforce?

For example the material used in ear plugs.

Would it be feasible?

yes that may work but you would have to do a lot of R&D to make it deform in the way you want. It would also be cheating

I'd say "rule interpretation" however, the tech regs are pretty heavy reading so I haven't gone into the ins and outs in much detail.

5mm, oh well.
That incorporates the obvious, normal C/F deflection, so no more for my idea.

Back to the drawing board...

F1 is already worried over the amount of flex that teams (at great expence) build, into their wings and things. See this month's Race Tech pp48-53.
According to that, current testing of wing deflection is crude in the extreme - hang a weight on it - so that the regs may be liberalised as they can't be enforced. So you migth be able to have a go, but IMHO this is to achieve that last 0.2% of advantage, and correspondingly expensive to do!

i think you have to hide the activation system really clever. So that at the TC i will be on the dimensions as in the regs.

But a nice idea, something to keep in mind.
