Engine options

Hi all,
I have just picked up an old FF chassis and am looking for a low cost engine/trans option for it.
Mainly going to use it on track days etc but may venture on to the track in the future.
Had a look at x-flow hewland but the cost of the box looks just plain stupid.
any advice welcome.
Cheers
Mark

That's what the chassis was designed for so anything else means loads of work.

If you are not going to race it and don't want to fit the correct engine and box the best option would be a bike engine and box.

What chassis is it?

I know of a Mark 9 gearbox for sale with 9/31 final drive unit and a bell housing, but the housing is off an RF'87.....

I have to be honest and say I have no idea
What sort of money is that going for?, still undecided if I stay x-flow or go for the bike engine route, cost will decide I guess.

Looks like a Crossle to me. Or something of that era. Maybe an old Reynard. If it is a Reynard, seek the advise of Dave Hart. He is a bit of a whiz with Reynards. Is there no plate or marking on it anywhere?

Oh well.

Thing is, you need to know to start getting some suspension together. Or do you have uprights and wishbones? We might be able to tell the chassis off the suspension if you have any pictures.

It's tough if you start trying to fabricate your own stuff. Unless you know about suspension geometries etc, your on a hiding to nothing. A friend of mine got a bare chassis and whilst a reasonable engineer, he could never get the thing to work.

I'd stick to the xflow option if I were you though. A year or so down the line when you decide you want to dip your toe into a bit of racing, you don't want to be changing it all again. Spend now to save in the future.

Front and rear suspension and uprights are like a Halke, but its not a crossle. Try the Halke web site.

Don't think it's a Ray

Do you know if it had side rads or front one?

The best thing I can think is for you to go to Google. Click on the images tab and do a search on PRS/Hawke/Royale/Crossle etc and see if it comes up with something. Failing that, try and contact a car restoration firm. Someone who deals in older race cars and they may have some info for you.

Best of luck..............

It would be nice to see it finished though.

I will get finished one way or another. I have been promissing myself this for many years and now I have restored Bikes, Classic cars and prepared a hillclimb Metro I think I have the tools and time to do it.
I appologies to anyone if I do choose the bike engine route and this offends but I am still looking........

Just a thought - there was a five-speed hewland on racecarsdirect a while ago. This is cheaper than 4 speed as less demand. Also road type kent 1600s are cheaper (and faster) than race spec ones.

It could well be a Royale but it's not an RP21...it must be earlier.
