Whatever happened to...

Bit of a blast from the past, but I have no idea why this idea was never implemented (undoubtedly it was rejected by the teams...), but it was supposed reduce dirty air for the following car, something which the current out of proportion wings seem unable to manage...

I think it was dropped because it only worked when the following car was sat directly behind the car in front. Once it had moved out to overtake.......

Most of the turbulence from the rear of an F1 car comes from the ability of the diffuser to work in conjunction with the rear wing. If you limit the diffuser (banning of double diffuser etc) and the rear wing (lift it higher up and make it smaller, which they have) you will have less turbulence. There are further limits on these items for 2013.

That and they substituted the idea for the huge moveable front wings, allegedly believing they would help overtaking. The Overtaking Working Group's (OWG) wonderful (not) work.
The front wings are no longer moveable, but still huge and ugly and hampering overtaking!

DRS to be fair has been a massive step forward in offsetting the disadvantage caused by wake turbulence.

It looks ridiculous. As it turned out, mere ugly was chosen.

These concept drawings do the rounds whenever the rules are due for renewal.

Agreed. Here's an image for the early concept of the 2013 regulations.

HRT, however, supplied its own concept image.

And a compromise was reached.

Well, these new cars are pretty quiet - perhaps he didn't hear it coming?

I thought that the design in the original post was ditched in favour of the current skinny rear wing and big front wing (introduced in 2009 IIRC?). We've got used to them now, but I remember thinking they looked really stupid when the first winter testing pics were published.

But then the whole double-diffuser loophole negated any gains for allowing cars to follow more closely.
