Tracks near london....

Hey all. I'm off to university in London in September, and don't want to stop my marshalling. Just wondering which were the closest ( and easiest to get to) tracks near london??

Erm...Brands has to be closest...depends on what mode of transport your going to be using though as most circuits can be quite hard to get to on public transport.

Crystal Palace is fantastic! Whooops!, Sorry, that was closed by Ken Livingstone back in the late 70s; early 80s!!!! Public Transport access used to be brilliant - Ah well!!

Theres a couple of Brands' marshals use public transport to get to the circuit. AFAIK they don't actually own cars. They seem to have no problem getting a train to Swanley and then cabsharing.

O'k, so I was joking, but in reality Brands Hatch is the nearest. Just off the A20, with the M20 running very close. It is probably about 25 miles from the centre of London, as those proverbial crows fly. Nearest Railhead is either Longfield, or Swanley both equidistant from access gates, but virtually no Bus service to link with the Circuit - Taxi only alternative, or fold-up bicycle.
Longfield is probably best by bicycle as slightly nearer and the road is level. (No hills). Both Stations have direct access from Victoria (SE Trains).

Short circuit wise there's: Wimbledon short oval and Arena Essex just off the M25

I have ridden my bike to Brands from Swanley numerous times, it's about 25-30 mins up a bit of a hill each way. The only thing is the time you have to be there in the morning - do trains run then? (I'm not a marshal). Cab is about £10-15 each way.

Also Rye House for Karting, station is right next to the circuit and trains run into Liverpool Street.

You'll also have the two big meetings and a couple of rallies and sprints at Goodwood which is accessible by rain but a little further than Brands.

Castle Coombe, Thruxton, Snetterton, Gurston Down, Silverstone, Mallory and Donnington can all be done in a day from London but will require a car.

Wimbledon on a Sunday evening is a good night out - 10 minute walk from the tube (forget which station, but it's NOT best to use Wimbledon - somewhere down the District Line)

Wimbledon Park on the District Line (last stop before the terminus at Wimbledon) ... also Haydons Road on what used to be BR... IIRC they are both pretty similar distance away from the venue.

Not Ken! circuit closed in '72 before his time I think-good chap Ken-his GLC provided me with my first mortgage-when building society would not coperate
The Sprint held in the 90s was stopped by the Bromley council which CP comes under.
As to public transport to Brands-last time I tried was for the first A1GP-seem to remember problems getting a taxi back- about a dozen of us were waiting by the hotel-eventually a mini bus was found.
One reason I never became a marshal-no means of getting there in time for start of practice.

for Rob29 and zac510

As I've already said, at the WTCC, one of my marshalling team came by train from South London, met up with another marshal and taxi shared from Swanley.

Assuming sign on on Saturdays by 8am,
heres what the trainline.com offers (but do not trust this 100%, always check, especially for weekends)

London Victoria to Swanley
Outward journey: Saturday 9 August 2008
From Victoria to Swanley (for taxis) or to Longfield (if cycling)
Depart/Arrive
06:18/06:45
06:39/07:10/07:19
06:43/07:26
07:09/07:40/07:49
07:18/07:45

Sundays sign on by 9am
07:35/08:03
07:42/08:10

Theres also the Blackfriars to Sevenoaks line that goes through Swanley, but it's a bit confusing at the weekend right now, although once it gets to Denmark Hill it seems to sort itself out.

[B]ROB 29 Yes, you are quite correct that Racing at Crystal Palace did stop in 1972; 23rd September 1972 to be quite correct, organised by the AMOC, and I was Deputy Clerk to Graham Bond. And, Yes - before Ken's time as Leader of the GLC, only just elected a Councillor then, but it is easy to blame hime for most of the disasters that have befallen London as he caused most of them, (IMHO)!!!!

Also remember the Forum, I have picked people up in random places before. I picked up Mandyhoo in Nottingham or somewhere once. If you know what station you are going to be at and roughly when. Ask, the worst that happens is you get lots of appologies, best you might save yourself a taxi or cycle ride.

Much nearer £20 I think from when I last did it [about a year ago now].

Let me know where you're staying and I can always give you a lift.
Doing the DTMs and a couple in November, including the Britcar Day-Night race.

You've never offered me a lift, I thought I was your favourite - West Hammy is only about 15mins on the train from my house
