Super Road Saloons

Watching the Road Saloons at Anglesey this past weekend got me to wondering... what exactly was the Super Road Saloons series and how did it differ from standard Road Saloons ? Was JB&Q the last champion in 1999 or did it get a run out after that ?

Tony_Simpson should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
If you are talking about the series I think you are then it is the BRSCC Lumination road saloon series that you watched at Anglesey. This has cars up to 2 litre multi valve, and up to 1.8 litre 8 valve, with modified engines, and 2 or 3 classes for standard engined cars. All cars have to have the interior and an MOT, and driven and hopefully from the circuit. The engines in the modified cars have to look standard from the outside but anything goes in them. The web site is: http://www.roadsaloons.com/Home.htm

THe other series is run by the BARC/BRSCC and is the super road/ modified production saloon series. This allows the interiors to be removed and alot more to the engine. try: www.rscc.co.uk for more info.

Both series have been very successfull in the past but not so in recent years. The 750mc series have pretty much taken over the budget saloon car series.

The cars that used to run in the Super Road Saloons and now the modified production saloons series are in, I beleieve pretty much the same spec as the cars that run in the Castle Combe Saloons. These cars are extensively modified especially in the engine area, although they do run on road tyres.

I believe the 'modified' class in the Road Saloons is what the 'Super Road Saloons' turned into.. The Mod-Prods are a totally different series though.. I reckon John was the last champion in '99

I always thought that the BRSCC super road saloon series(previoisly sponsered by Toyo tyres amongst others) and the BARC Modified production saloons were joined together in one series, as the rules were very similar in both series.

In the beginning (well the late 80's & early 90's) there were the Slick 50 Road Saloons and the Toyo Tyres Super Road Saloons, the latter of which I raced in 1992 to 1996 and even made it to the TV screens as part of a Formula 2 raceday screened on Anglia TV's 'Wheels@ programme.
I can't remember the details of the reg's that set the two apart but the Road Saloons had to be driven to and from each meeting and I think ran on Uniroyal tyres, the Toyo lot were more modified and from 1991 were allowed to be trailered, both Championships were hugely supported, usually with two full grids for each Championship at each venue ie class A & B one race, class C& D another. Some rule tweeking in the mid-later 90's prohibited lots of cars that had been racing such as the Lotus Sunbeams etc and gradually things fizzled away, but yes the Road's are now the Lumenitions and the Toyos merged with Mod Prods.
