Rothmans XA GT

Last night...lemme tellya I feel so bad...

Hang on thats a song...

No, last night, I went to a reasonably entertaining spiel by Vigil Insurance to a bunch of car club reps. During the evening, the MEL based assessor said that a "Rothmans XA GT" had come to light and he needed to do some research into the subject as he hadn't heard about them.

Certainly got me thinking, can someone refresh my memory on who drove these units?? Ickx springs to mind?? must look up a Bathurst website.....mumbles off

The XA GT had a very short racing life... except in the hands of John Goss. When the Group C rules started in 1973, Goss switched over immediately, while the FoMoCo team kept going with the XY.

The works XAs made their debut at the Adelaide 250, leading home a 1-2-3. Engine troubles struck at the Sandown 250 and then Moffat and Big Pete won at Bathurst. Tyre and engine dramas struck at Surfers and Phillip Island.

After that the works team prepared for the 1974 season, changing over to XB panel work. Goss also built an XB but kept his old XA and brought it back out for Bathurst that year and won. I think Gary Willmington eventually bought it.
Murray Carter's was the only other one and he converted it to XB panels as well.

But I don't know of a Rothmans XA, unless it was a sports sedan.

Of course I forgot the John French green and purple car, which I think became the Dick Johnson XA sports sedan under the ownership of Bryan Byrt.

I had to think about it but Camel was on the XCs and Camel was a brand of RJ Reynolds, not Rothmans. Peter Stuyvesant is a Rothmans brand.

Of course you can check out the XAs and XCs at:

Nice site that...
