Do any of the current F1 drivers....
Race competitively in any other series ?? Are they even allowed to ?? I guess they stay sharp by driving shifter carts etc, but what about for prize money ??
Just wondering... Alan |

Some of the drive Karts in the off season (Barrichello and Massa, along with Kanaan have recently won the 24 hour Kart race) but i should imagine that it's done for charity, can't see them being paid for it, or their respective employers allowing them to be paid for it.

As far as I know, all of them are currently forbidden by contract from competing in anything but F1. Which _really_ bites. Seems it's consistently been that way since the mid-90s.
To his credit, though, Fernando Alonso competed in the Michelin Race of Champions rallycross invitational last month. Years ago, many of them would do the Monte Carlo Rally, LeMans, Sebring, the Daytona 24, the Indy 500, or non-championship F1 races, in search of prize money. But that's not really been the case for a few decades now. I miss those days. |

Lee, I guess I don't. I still curse the day that Jimmy Clark did that F2 race
But you are correct - Stirling Moss used to race anything he could lay his hands on - he just loved racing cars. As for contractual limitations, I think some drivers have it in their contracts that they are not even allowed to ski. Same as how most Super 12 Rugby players are not allowed to compete in Rugby 7's. |

I mourn Clark's death too, but there's no way to know what might have happened had he not been in that F2 race... He might have died in a road accident the next day, or in an F1 crash....
We've all got to go someday, might as well make the most of the time we've got. Because it's the things you _didn't_ get to do you'll regret in the end. |

I've sailed a 12'9" dinghy in a 3 metre swell in 36 knots wind in the Japan sea. Scared the living daylights out of me.

I think it's sad that there are contracts not allowing drivers from racing in anything else. I thought race drivers like to race, but most of the time they only do it 16 times a year.

I agree , but if I was paying some guy x amount of millions of dollars then I wouldnt want him having the slightest chance of being injured in anything else

It is for this reason I can never group the greats of today with the greats of the past. Lets look at Mario Andretti.
A winner in Speedway, Champcars, Formula 1, Stock Cars, Hill Climbs, Sportscars, everything. Front and rear engined, dirt or tarmac, closed or open cockpit, wet or dry, he could win. That is what I want to see. |

That's the point Marcus. Exactly.
Most of the teams have to be sure they will have their drivers 100% fit for the season. |

Apparently the drivers are insured by their teams. It probably bumps the premium up quite a bit if they go ski-ing (etc...)!

Quite a few F1 drivers raced other things until the mid 80's- Up to around 1985/6, quite a few F1 drivers regularly raced sportscars or touring cars- Gerhard Berger regularly drove in the ETCC for BMW for example,I think right up to when he joined Ferrari
One of the big turning points was 1985 when Manfred Winkelhock and Stefan Bellof were both killed in 85(and Jonathan Palmer injured) within in a very short space of time (Bellof & Palmer's accidents were at the same meeting)in sportscars. I seem to remember that Tyrrell asked Martin Brundle to stop racing sportscars almost immediately One or two did occasionally turn out in other things after that- Jean Alesi had a couple of outings in French touring cars with Alfa around 1993/4 for example |

I used to love watching Clark in that Lotus Cortina on three wheels tucked up behind one of those ex NASCAR 7 litre Ford Galaxy's (like ole neilap drives around in Miami)

off of the subject slightly but there are plenty of ex F1 drivers and drivers who test F1 cars full time who race in the TWS at the moment. Ricardo Zonta for one, Marc Gene is aiming for a race seat in 2003. And Pedro Lamy is also aiming to be in the TWS series in 2003. As I say not current F1 drivers but Gene and Zonta have a chance of making it back into F1 one day.

Well, F1 racing now is totally professional, and involves a helluva lot of money invested by the different teams. To be honest, I am surprised that Ferrari even allows SchM to play soccer matches. With today's high G loadings in F1 cars, an elbow in the cheekbone during a "friendly" soccer game could end his career.

I guess it's because they are super fit, which makes it hard for them to sustain injuries.

No Jukes!! If you have seen some of the injuries in superfit athletes who play Aussi Rules football, you'd understand what I say. The captain of Essendon had his cheekbone collapsed when his face collided with the knee of a team mate.

Didn't Graham Hill win the F1 title, Daytona 500 and Le Mans?

I think Graham's the only driver to have won F1, Daytona, Indy and LeMans.

Graham Hill didn't win Daytona.
Mario Andretti won Daytona, Indy and the F1 title however. |
