Of course not but then you CAN beat the current record and tell the world about it. Much the same as Jensen in the McLaren at Bathurst - not an official lap record but it was the quickest lap around there and got plenty of attention.

yes of course , as long as it is officially recorded.

Intelligent people are well aware of the difference between race laps and practise lap records though

Do V8SA fit into this category?

Is there such a thing as a practice lap record?

Official track records can only be set in race conditions, it has been thus for decades in Australia and elsewhere in the motorsport world (notable not in the USA though).

Given every session on track is timed these days, it obviously doesn't stop categories making note of laptimes in practice and qualifying and if they are quick, promoting the fact, as V8Supercars have done for years.

If they can't promote a category "lap record" attempt for the first 'SuperTest' since 1979, what can they promote other than new stickers?

maybe decades ago you were right, but times have changed as you said, practise records are very much part of things in the new world.

if it helps the other event will also be promoting their practise record, as they did last year.

Times have changed lets move with them instead of being anchors

The thing we must remember is such times mean bugger all in the overall scheme of things-we all know that practise times can be done with minimal fuel load ,optimum settings etc etc etc and really do not reflect the reality of times actually recorded during a race.
Records set during racing reflect excellence whilst dealing with a whole lot of things not always present whilst practising or qualifying (such as dicing with others, lapping traffic, not being able to button off or tool around to get clear track etc) and applies across the board for all catagories.

What practice record was the other event promoting last year?

SVG did the fastest lap of the whole weekend in the race, resetting (at the time) the Mt Panorama lap record in the process, that is the only one I recall being promoted.

Practice records are practice records, but they are not official lap records.

Search shows that Speedcafe did promote Engel's 2:04:5 "record" from Friday practice last year, but no more or less than you would expect. http://www.speedcafe.com/2014/02/07/...inal-practice/ Of course, once the event was run and won that lap meant nothing in light of SVG's efforts right at the end.

However, the lap I remember getting REAL publicity was the event (Bathurst lap sprint) at which the late Allan Simonsen did a 2:04 in a Ferrari. http://www.speedcafe.com/2011/11/13/...t-at-bathurst/

Yeah that was a strange one - CAMS deemed that event to be an equivalent of a lap record (occurring in a race) and stood until the F3 cars nabbed it the following year at Easter.

Perhaps you can show us the press release where it states that lap records can now be officially broken during non-racing sessions?

Individual categories can call times set in practice whatever they want. If practice times count as lap records in "V8 land", then that is great, but its also only as official as me saying i have the lap record for driving a lap of my work shop premises...

How can I find you a press release for something that I have never said.

What I did say is "intelligent people are aware of the difference between race records and practice records."

Clearly the v8 test session is about the practice record of 1:29.0808 Set On 23/08/2014 By Scott McLaughlin In A Volvo S60
as opposed to the Current Race Lap Record Is 1:30.9123 Set On 26/08/2012 By Garth Tander In A Holden Commodore VE2

Im just quoting natsoft here, an organisation to keepdata and statistics on motosport

So...what was the selling point of all this again?

-Wasn't a big point the unveiling of the new liveries?
Pretty much all been revealed now in the week proceeding only to have one common theme.. a seemingly big lack of sponsorship for a lot of teams!
Or "reduced commitment" if you want to put it nicely.

-To get the focus on V8 Supercars and exposure to a broader audience (Foxtel/Ch10)?
Yep, hold it on the same weekend as another major motorsport event, polarising fans and reducing both your attendance & TV viewers. but enough has been said on this....

I really hope there is some excitement on track with the lap time challenge/reward (which I missed what the prize ended up being)
Otherwise this BIG event may end up being a fizzer.

As a V8SC fan (& Foxtel subscriber) I was looking forward to this year.
I am however starting to get a little concerned that the naysayers may be right!

Bit disappointed Fox aren't showing anything of the
Saturday test live (unless there hiding it on there
program guide).

There spouting about every practice, qualifying and
race live. As this is a fully sanctioned V8 Supercar
event, I thought the powers to be in V8 land might
not be amused by lack of coverage.

Just my thoughts.
