A bit OT, Old Grand prix programmes
Due to the boredom driven by a lack of F1 on our TV screens, I've been watching the old F1 race collections my dad built up over the years, starting from the 1987 season. How good was the music then? We had The Chain by Fleetwood Mac and I like the music played over the Grid line up before the start of the race. Anyone have any idea where I could get it?

No the music played over the Grid line up. For some reason it just gets you in the mood for a race. Its probably not available anywhere anyway.

Just been listening to The Chain. So evocative of my earliest F1 memories.
I love how music can take you to a certain era or moment in your life. Smells even more so. |

He doesn't mean The Chain. He means the plinky-plonky dancey bit that got played as the cars lined-up on the grid. I'm not sure if it was played during live broadcasts, but it was definitely played on the highlights show.

Sorry for the hugest necropost in human history, but I just found it. It's Ivory Tower by Giorgio Moroder - it's on Spotify assuming we're talking about the same song.

Aye, it's from The Never Ending Story
In YouTube form and what it actually looked like What was the tune they used to replace it? Another electronic number but more 90s. Can't find an example on YouTube as I think it was used more in the highlights programmes |

The bloke that wrote it, Giorgio Moroder, was part of the Cizeta project (the V16 supercar they didn't build many of, where the engine was two V8s stuck together). The US border people seized one last month, they think it may be stolen but got it because it allegedly isn't road legal over there - it appears the US customs lot don't care if you drive it on the road or not, better be careful if you own a single seater.
Moroder himself has won several Oscars, and did the official theme songs of the LA and Seoul Olympics and Italia 90. The film the song is from is supposedly what was the biggest budget film outside of the US or Soviet Union at the time. No idea about the replacement. |
