JV got offered a McLaren seat for 1999, and again for 2002 after he was getting some podiums in the BAR Honda. And JV didn't follow the dollars, he followed the advice of a friend, a delusional friend, but a friend nonetheless. |

Presumably the McLaren seat was DC’s. I suspect Häkkinen would have had him covered.

And he was offered a Benetton seat for 2001. Although the Benetton was a dog that season, it might have been better long term

Even if he’d stuck it out at Enstone until the good times came around again in the mid-2000s, Alonso would have exposed him.

The more interesting topic would, I guess be, what is the worst car to ever win a WDC.

A better subject would be, who was the worst driver to not win a WDC in the best car?

For me, there are two types of champions: the great and the very good.
Great: Fangio, Ascari, Brabham, Clark, Surtees, Stewart, Rindt, Lauda, Prost, Senna, Schumi, Hakkinen, Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Vettel Very Good: Farina, Hawthorn, all three Hills, Hulme, Fittipaldi, Hunt the Shunt, Andretti, Scheckter, Jonesy, Piquet, both Rosbergs, Mansell, Villeneuve No such thing as a bad champion to me |

At first I forgot myself and thought “Villeneuve only ‘very good’? That’s brave”, then I remembered that Gilles was never world champion.

Villeneuve Sr was certainly a great who never won a championship, along with Moss, Brooks, Gurney, Peterson and Montoya

i wish i was the worst world champion
well actually i'd hate to live with the bitterness of Jacques Villeneuve but if i could steal his achievements and attach them to myself that would nice |

Actually I think I might make a change to my list of great and very good champs. Move Piquet into the great section. And I forgot Button, who I put in the very good category

I guess it's another one for the ignore list, then.
It's like they're coming out in droves lately... |

Most of us are armchair racers aren't we? (Well those who've never raced, anyway). I'll always believe I could have been the next big thing - and I was certainly better than J. Villeneuve, for sure........ |

Regardless of what people feel about “famous racer X” (someone who maybe is not considered the “best”), most racing fans would be nuts to not want the level of skill, opportunities and experience to at least complete (and sometimes win) at the highest level. Richard |
