1961 BRSCC Club Racing Film (Rufforth)

BRSCC - Two in September 1961:-
(Rufforth circuit is a disused motor racing circuit built on an airfield in North Yorkshire)

This great piece of nostalgia is, with thanks, from film maker and Clubmans competitor George Duncan.

A stunning couple of films with great quality sound and vision. The Cadwell F3 race reminds me just how exciting the 1litre single seater formula racing was. Not sure about 1961 though, late sixties, possibly even early 70's.

Ok, just Googled, Rufforth operated as a circuit in the early 60's, hence the title. I think the Cadwell race is later.

Brilliant pieces of nostalgia there, great to see such good quality films from back then. I'd also agree that these races were both much later than 1961. The MK1 Escort (which appeared racing at both meetings) didn't come out until 1967, plus I spotted an 'E' registration land Rover at Rufforth which means 1967-68 registration. I'd guess late 1960's at the earliest, but thanks a million for finding & sharing the film.

What a great pair of films , bringing back fond memories of the sixties . Love the helpers putting up the circuit and then disappearing to the local for a Double Diamond and a Players No6 ! The Cadwell Formula Three race is certainly 1969 according to formula 2.net and given that the racing at Rufforth featured both Ford Escorts and Formula Fords ( began in 1967 ) it is highly likely to be about the same time .

A good film, however I did post this on tea break the other day hoping that Peter Wray would see it as I know he used to race there back in the day

Definitely 1969 - I was at the Rufforth meeting and the film really evoked the 'can -do ' approach of the BRSCC to club racing . As a 16 year old I'd get two buses , a train and then a 5 mile walk to Rufforth from York (cries of 'luxury, you had it easy etc')

Cadwell was unknown to me then - a very long walk - but the meeting was late September and saw the debut of the March 703 in Peterson's hands .

Huge thanks for posting - it has made me positively misty eyed

Just to add - I think the Brian Robinson Cortina at Rufforth has an FVA, rather than the usual Lotus twin cam . One of his certainly did.

Thanks for that, Gordon. The Rufforth race, I believe would have been either late 1967 or sometime in 1968, and my brother and I weren't there for that race - I think we were between cars at the time putting bits of our damaged first car on to a new shell. The circuit was only about 17 miles from where I lived and all meetings there were on Saturdays. The circuit had to be built/marked out a couple of days before each meeting as it was a reserve RAF base then, though had no squadrons of planes based there. The paddock was a way away from the 'pits' and start line and a large van was used to carry the mechanics etc. to the start area before each race then back to the paddock after the race. Toilets and eating facilities were, err, basic.

As an aside, fellow tenther, Dave M, recently sent me a photo of my first Anglia racing at Rufforth in 1967.

Happy days.
