"Course" Grade Scrapped?

Reading from another thread (Students Marshalling) it has been said that the COURSE Grade has been scrapped by the MSA!

Anyone shed any more light on this?

I know a couple of Trainees that are to become Course next year, they will be chuffed if there become Incident!
Perhaps they are just putting more sigs down between trainee to Incident??
And It's on the application for next years BGP!

Oh, and thanks!!

Well I'm due to upgrade as soon as I get my fire training signiture - however I've no interest in doing Incident - I want to go to Flags! so what do I do if they scrap Course?

There are plans afoot by the MSA to completely change the grading scheme so carefully orchestrated by the BMRMC in the early 1970's. Nothing set in stone; as yet!!!

Perhaps the BMMC haven't told us yet for many reasons - possibly waiting to see how the MSA's proposals transpire.

Perhaps Mike told his Students this unaware that the Marshals Clubs hadn't officially gone "Public" on this.

Perhaps it's all poppycock.

I understand that Stephen has asked Chris Hobson to look in here and possibly make a comment.

I'm pretty sure your supposed to grade to incident before grading to flag anyway?!

Unless it is about to change, the BMRMC website grading scheme is trainee marshal to coures marshal subject to signitures & training days, at course grade you can either grade as FLAG OR INCIDENT. This is the same as surprise surprise the MSA chart, howerver the MSA one that I have to hand was issued in 2002 and I did not see a link on the web site.

I have noticed an increasing tendancy on the groubd for course marshals to be refererred to as Incident marshals. Maybe this is reason behind the rumours? In any case, with the exception of snatch duties, is there any real difference between a course marshal and an IO these days?

I've done snatch duties as a course marshal...if you are refering to only IO's doing it. So theres not a huge difference, bar the experience side of things.

I stand corrected on the course to flag point!

Yes - the systems is under review but it would be silly to publish something that is still being discussed as that is likely to cause more problems.

I am sure the people involved are looking professionally at all aspects including the current shortage of marshals, the variances in race/kart/speed etc, and the need to be more multi-skilled rather than insular in our duties.

I never liked being called course (they even call me that now) so no fears if that gets renamed.

I've also heard (A While ago now) that the Examining Observer is being scrapped.
Observers who have not got an "X" will be able to give signatures

That's a good idea, there's precious few X Observers anyway.

There's a world of difference! In an ideal world a course marshal would only be attending incidents in the company of an incident marshal (unless (s)he is well on the way to incident grade). Again, in an ideal world, an IO will not actually be dealing 'hands on' with incidents - the IO's role in the event of an incident is to manage the team, decide on the 'plan of attack' for big incidents & act as the link between the incident team & the observer.

Snatch? Not any of the circuits I marshal at!

All the time I've been marshalling, except for TOCA meetings, whenever I've received my final instructions the Incident list covers everybody from Trainee to IO.

I did the same, however, although you can run two cards at the same time the perceived way is to grade for one at a time and the accepted route is: course, incident and then either flag or io.

You can also grade for flag with a specialist badge..................................

Snatching is being used at more and more circuits, it's a skilled job and it would be nice to have the MSA grade give it a proper specialist grade.

Where's the skill in tying a rope to a Landrover and getting it stuck in the mud.

If you're really skilled you can remove the rear wing / gearbox end plates on FPA cars, and thats only on the tarmac run of at Copse. And for those who think that it qualifies for the Richard Cranium Award I claim Diplomatic Imunity.
