The Best Aussie Muscle Car!
Motor Magazine (July Issue) have tested nine Australian performance cars and the winner was the only non V8!
The Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo. Just happen to know someone with one in the garage! Great car. Goes like the clappers and handles too. |

Without doubt, the best ... the only truly Aussie muscle car is and has always been the 1974 valiant charger r/t. There's simply no more to say on the subject. It went like hell on wheels. It was big brutal and it thrashed everything in sight then and now....... (rebuffs and replies welcome) |

 What I want to know though, is by what criteria was the XR6 chosen? Surely a muscle car must have a V8 (or larger ) by definition, no?

Now now, Tristan, being probably unaware of the great advantages of sheer, unbridled torque, doesn't know what he's missing. In fact, not owning any of the above mentioned cars now or previously (even the beetle), I don't know what I'm missing but I want to know...

How it was a six (less fuel consumption than a V8, but could end up being a cult car like the WXR. I mean, I was going for every straw here. She relented, and I signed up the next day. It performs better than the V8. Especially up high in the rev range. I have 240 kws, the V8 has 260 kws. For $1500 Aussie Pasos I can up grade the ECU to achieve about 300 kws. This is with induction and chip changes only. Is it a four door, well yes. But power to the masses. Not "I wish I has a $50K XB like Mel" but, I can drive it each day, take the kids with me, and, blow the doors off the equivalent LS1 engined GM product. |

Turbos did come about as a way of increasing the power output of smaller displacement engines, aiming at a lighter, more economical package than a bigger NA unit with the same power. But when you look at what's available now - even in our tiny crowded island with extortionate fuel prices - more and more manufacturers are using them to make big engined cars even more powerful.
Hence we have cars like the Audi RS6 (4.2 V8 twin turbo), Mercedes S600 and CL600 (6.0 V12 twin turbo), and the daddy of them all - Bentley Arnage T (6.75 V8 twin turbo). In a similar forced induction vein, I guess you can add the Jag XJR/XKR/S-type R (4.2 V8 supercharged) and the Mercedes E55/SL55 (5.5 V8 supercharged). The least powerful of all these is over 400bhp, and I know of freight locos with less torque than the S600 or Arnage. It's crazy, but I love it!

The best Aussie muscle car has to be my VR SS V8, with the brilliant Holden V8 as opposed to the rubbish Chev one.....

Well the BA certainly looks a whole heap better than the AU (could it be any worse?), and it's good to finally see Ford putting modern 24 valve DOHC I-6 engines in their cars.
I'm told the Falcon XR6 Turbo does the standing 1/4 mile in just over 14.1 seconds, which is quite quick, but if you want my vote for best Aussie Muscle Car, then the answer is the same as I gave in the historic forum question about "suggestions for an unusual but competitive Historic Racer"..... the E49 Charger. In it's day it was recorded as pulling 14.4 seconds for the standing 1/4 mile, but with modern (but still road legal) rubber, it can do sub 14.0 times.
