Unusual facts and figures

Currently trying to put together an article on Formula 1, and need to find as many amazing facts & figures about it as possible (particularly relating to the money/glamour/excess side of it). The piece is for readers who aren't necessarily F1 fans...anyone got any suggestions?

Many thanks

What I meant was...I'm trying to make the piece interesting to people whose first interest isn't necessarily F1, so it needs to be as striking as possible! Any suggestions gratefully received...

There was a half decent article in the Times, but they've changed their online archive so that you have to pay to see old articles, and so I'm not going to bother. Sorry.

here's some facts about F1 engines:

In an F1 engine revving at 18,000 rpm, the piston will travel up and down 300 times a second.

Maximum piston acceleration is approximately 7,000 g (humans pass out at 7-8 g) which puts a load of over 3 tons on each connecting rod.

The piston only moves around 50 mm but will accelerate from 0 - 100 km/h and back to 0 again in around 0.0025 seconds.
If a connecting rod let go of its piston at maximum engine speed, the piston would have enough energy to travel vertically over 100 metres.

If a water hose were to blow off, the complete cooling system would empty in just over a second.

JD: Go to forbes.com and search for "Ecclestone" or "Ringmeister". They did a real good article surveying the economics of F1 last July.
