Would you prefer Michelin's solution of making one set of tyres to last as long as possible, so as not to incur a heavy penalty for changing those tyres?

By "as long as possible" I'm talking 4 or 5 races, or even longer.

And you think that tyres are talked about too much now!

And exactly how hard do these 'other' tyres need to be? Do they need to degrade a little bit? Do they need to degrade not as much as the Pirelli's? Or do they need to be so resistant to wear that they can, and must last, for more than one race?

Whichever one you chose it would still be a choice for a tyre that favoured some cars and not others.
Trouble is also that it causes the old "marbles" scenario and one racing line ... AGP saw more marbles than I had seen in years

The Australian GP was also a relatively 'cold' GP, as were the Barcelona tests. The Malaysian GP will probably be more indicative of actual tyre wear.

There is no doubt in my mind that if Pirelli brought only the hard compound tyre to every race, people would then start to complain about how predictable the racing had become. After just a few laps, we would start to wonder if the 'ever so light on its tyres, whilst also being very quick on them' Lotus of Raikkonen's, could fall prey to an engine failure or driver error. Neither would seem likely.

In fact, the last few races of the 2012 season were indicative of Pirelli's rather conservative tyre options for those races.

The races were great after the teams got a handle on the tyres last year. Austin was the race of the year.

Pirelli confirming that they will be using the new P Zero Orange hard compound, things may get interesting in Malaysia.

Really! Race of the year? Apart from the short lived Vettel/Hamilton dice, there wasn't really much to write about. And if Hamilton had got ahead of Vettel at the first corner - nothing at all to write about! I can only hope that Pirelli took note of that.

Not as interesting as if they had only turned up with the super-soft tyre.

Hard tyres tend to accentuate the differences in the cars a lot more. Quite often, the cars tend to spend quite a lot of time on this tyre during a race. If your car isn't good on that tyre, then you're in for a long afternoon.

This one's Kimi's to lose, I reckon.

Well if Kimi had got ahead into turn one on Sunday it probably would have been pretty meh as well.

It was an outstanding race, two wonderful drivers right on the limit lap after lap with not an error or a fag paper between them. Top level sport at its best.

But no, actually, rubbish because of something that never actually happened.

Yes, Michelin got their 'green' hat on and came up with something along the lines of going head-to-head with other tyre manufacturers to have a tyre manufacturers constructors championship based on how long each set of tyres would last into the season.

Now, if you think that the tyres are talked about a lot at the moment, it would be nothing compared to what Michelin were proposing.

The thing being is that any tyre manufacturer can make a tyre that will last to the end of a GP. Michelin and Bridgestone did that, and they were also making tyres that had to be faster than each others tyres at the same time. Easy-Peasy. So, the only other option open to avoid making tyres a contrived product, would be to have tyres that lasted for as many races as possible.

The FIA didn't bite.

Can't find the article that fully explains Michelin's suggestion, but it is alluded to in this article.

" measures to demonstrate - "respect for the environment". "

So the tyres don't work in Barcelona/Australia temps , the tyres don't work in Malaysia temps , so what is the temperature range then Mr Hembry ?

They're delaminating!? You mean, like the 2005 Michelin tyres?

Most teams seem to be happy enough with the tyres. Some would say that Red Bull not being happy with tyre degradation is a good thing. We can only hope that they start winning races real soon.

So tyre delamination on a bog standard circuit is fine because it is Pirelli. Interesting.

Supposedly the tyres are going because they can't withstand the downforce levels of certain cars. Wonderful stuff.

Who's to blame?

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/106327

Point being, that if it isn't bothering Lotus, then it shouldn't be bothering anyone else.

It's unbelievable! Pirelli make a tyre that Red Bull aren't happy with and people start to complain about it! Just no pleasing some people.

It's simple: Lotus designed a car for the 2013 season better than the others (assuming), knowing that tire wear was going to be a factor since last Summer. Who's to say that Lotus wouldn't be just as fast as Red Bull over a single lap if they had designed the car with downforce and qualifying in mind like it appears Red Bull has.

People are complaining because people like to complain, people would be complaining if Red Bull was dominating on rock hard Fred Bridgestone tires and people will complain now. However, I'm not going to complain about other people complaining as that would kind of defeat the purpose of criticising complaining.

Delamination on the other hand, Is a serious issue if it does persist, in the area of safety.

I fail to find the particular proposal as you mentioned before. However, I do not see any reason not to get rid of pit stops and thereby mandating tyres to last the entire race. Tyre management would still be an important skill, although in an ecologically more responsible way.
