Our leading drivers still not respecting the yellow flags

Why was more not made (on the Channel 7 telecast at least) of Jamie Whincup running off the track at Turn 9 while the safety car had been deployed, and the "SC" signs were out?

Now its been obvious for years that drivers these days pay little attention to local yellows, and just keep the foot down, but here we had the leading driver in the category falling off the road during a full course caution, at the point of the track where the actual incident took place, at a time when he shouldn't have been pushing and should have been showing awareness to the situation.

Of course the reason he was pushing is obvious, they were making a pitstop and didn't want to lose track position. This is surely quite hypocritical of the rule makers, who firstly throw safety cars for the most minute of reasons these days on safety grounds, yet let the drivers race back at full speed without any consequence.

Why did the commentators not pickup on it, or follow it up?? It was quite obvious the incident took place under safety car conditions.

Will the officials do anything about it? It sets a dangerous precedent surely....

No one gets more annoyed at those bloody safety car appearances more than me, but if they send it out, at least do it properly....

Because it isn't called a "Safety Car" any more its called a "Entertainment Car" and why would the drivers look at the yellows because they all think we don't know anything anyway.....

My thoughts exactly. Also noticed the Safety Car waving through a lapped Winterbottom car just before turn 9 where the debris was at turn 10. Hopefully the debris was cleaned up before he was released.

As far as the V8 Supercars go, it is racing (but no overtaking) until they catch up to the Safety Car. This act will comeback to bite them one day, hopefully not causing an injury to a driver or official in the process.

R they not a rule to with them selves. Just goes to show that they have no respect for CAMS and Australian Motorpsort. This has being going on for years.

This sort of brain fade thing happens in all classes and categories, safety car or not. Sometimes, its just the nut behind the wheel, other times something mechanical....build a bridge....drivers ignore Flagged advice (often) and at their own peril

Because it'd Whincup and it's C7. They can't be berating their star attraction now can they? But then again, givemn the amount of canera time they get (include Dutton and Dane) it is a wonder it wasn't noticed.

Having spent several years trackside at state/club level racing, there is plenty of ignoring yellow flags going on at 'everyday motosport' level too.

I have to agree with BFC, until such time as a marshal is killed or seriously injured nothing will be done about it, I just hope it's not myself or one of my friends involved.

We even had the recent example at the V8 Test Day at Winton where a V8Supercar driver drove at near enough to full race pace for 2 laps under full course red lights and his team manager couldn't really see a problem with it. Well lets put that driver & team manager in the middle of the race track and let us marshals drive around them at near enough to race pace and see how they like it.

Perhaps the time has come to extend the requirement to work a marshal post for a day for all racing licence renewals and not just new applicants. Might help change the attitude of these prima donna racers to our view of things.

Guys what about steven johnson . He lost 8 spots whilst behind the safety car nothing was said about that either. I know its not a safety concern but under the rules isnt it illegal to pass under a safety car?

That's a difference I've failed to notice. Been a long while since I've seen a yellow flag infringement penalised. Far often consigned to the too-hard basket.

I have been on this band-wagon for years, but these people (v8 drivers and Race Director) see themselves as above all that coz nothing has happened in the past.

I remember when the V8's lead the way by dropping the pit lane speed limit to 40km/h, it forced all the tracks to re-consider how they did it when the V8's weren't at the track, it was called risk minimisation.

For the life of me I cannot understand why they are letting this go un-checked. It is a time bomb. In case you have forgoten or need a reason then maybe PVDA could post a link to that horrible video.

Risk minimisation...

At club levels the 'control' demonstrated by CoC's is sometimes considered harsh,however these 'club level' guys appreciate that in the event of injury/fatality, there will be serious questions to answer.

In the "top div" as observed so far, it is indeed a time bomb.
WHEN...being more likely than...IF...as time goes by, some ace cleans up a safari crewman, their will be some sort of Official Hearing...True?...and those saying "We could see this coming and no one did anything about it"....who will penalised then,and how?

The driver/drivers involved...the trackside worker for not having seen it comming...or the 'organisers' for not being in 'control' of risk management?

Legally,Motor racings organisers may be considered the cause of 'a tragic event'
The 'best in the country',not wise to consider it won't happen to them IMO.
Legal enquiries,'Hearings' are usually not chaired by fans of racing,focus on the negative and gain critical publicity, the sort the sport can do without.

As for you safari crewmen...Risk management.
One of your own had the answer I recon,don't be in too much of a hurry placing yourselves in harms way of any percieved risks.

Cover your ass,or loose it... ... what will "the organisers" do?

What astounds me more then anything is, this is not a hard problem to fix! There are numerous low-cost alternatives that will slow EVERYBODY down, therefore disadvantaging no-one and allowing the 'race to the pitlane' to continue...
