Talking of "get you home repairs" what sort of "bodge ups" have any of the 10ths brigade had to do over the years.
I used a log of wood to jam up the suspension of my old van years ago when one of the springs broke, another time I drove the same van back from the west country with a non releasing clutch when the clutch release fork snapped in half. |

Otherwise I guess it's call an Uber? Or get the support team to stop and drop off your spare bike? Can you get run flat tyres for bikes these days? |

Ah, the joys of seeing the Universe without light pollution. Scotland can be pretty good as well. Maybe parts of Wales as well. Much of England now has so many built up areas with industrial sites lit all night for "operations and security" that getting a full view of the heavens can be extremely difficult even in the middle of one of the larger moorland areas. |

At that point it was realised that in all the clutch changes only the friction plate had been renewed. Changing the entire clutch assembly totally solved the problem - though I had come to enjoy clutchless changes so much I continued to employ them. Duct Tape to fix a couple of dodgy old hoses on a well used Transit back in the 70s. In fact Duct tape for a lot of things over the years. A couple of blocks of something like 3x3 or 4x4 hardwood bolted through the floor pan of an Escort GT to mount an AVO Rally seat on the driver's side. DFVs were always transported with a L shaped angled metal bar bolted to the front. And Escort van with a 1/2 inch Ply floor and a couple of holes drilled through both the the ply and the floor pan at the appropriate points could fit 2 DFVs in tandem and even just dropping a couple of bolts through the holes was enough to keep them more or less in place despite some spirited driving. On first use the holes tended to widen a little but after the initial enlargement the hole size seemed to stabilise and the engines never rotated more than 2 or 3 inches. Getting the engines to shift was an interesting way to counter understeer, though usually a bit sudden in its effect. I'm not sure what would have happened in a serious accident situation ... |

Monsieur Gordon Stresser, soyez vivement remercié! I really enjoyed it. There is a Goodwood thread and this is no provocation but was wondering if in its time this strange machine was that fast. GW coverage is really good, its possible to see that the courtesy lamp was lit. Gordon thank you for the time you invested to find this video and share with us.

Yes, great find Gordon! Whatever criticisms can be made of Goodwood, their camera positions and the car control they show are the best.
Tough life for our delta. The latest pic of his family time before Phillip Island. This from the man that said he’d ‘rather be motor racing’....... It’s at Wanaka, and if that is mispelt, blame him! |

In competition, we had the B19 repair last season where, after kerb damage, the front body was reinforced with a tubular alloy boat hook, and I remember doing the Norwich Union Classic Car run in Cooper S with one rear corner held up by a piece of wood- after the ball joint between the rubber suspension cone and trailing arm snapped. Just after the start....... |

Sorry, Gordon, noticed just now my automatic corrector changed your name, apologies no pun intended. Streeter I meant. Sorry again.
The most stupid we did is to try and qualify in Production grid at Montlhéry with a GT5 Turbo we used at school. Of course abusing the kerbs there led to a completely free moving steering rack. Because we had some "relations" I was allowed for two laps, but lost the massive wise grips keeping the whole thing together. Nice driving lanes tho… |

Plenty of clutchless drives over the years, most recently in Mrs Zefs Alfa Giullieta, used 1st and starter to pull away, everything else simple.
Limped home in a mini van with a Leakey brake wheel cylinder, 4 people and 2 dogs. . . .very light pedal! Possibly most dangerous was Lambretta 225, snapped throttle cable, pulled inner out and wrapped it round grip. Fine until you went round a left hand corner! |

What about bicycles Gerard? Front brake- which side for you, left or right?
I always assumed the right lever would be front everywhere, but when cycling in the USA many years ago found that their layout had it on the left. At least it’s easy to change..... |

Not a bodge, but while out on a training ride one evening 10 miles from home Eric's chain broke, so I had to push him all the way home. Hard up hill but a doddle going down.
My Viva frequently broke it's clutch cable which meant starting in gear, and trying not to stop at junctions or lights. Not fun. And of course the 'broken fan belt' that required your lady passenger to sacrifice her tights for an emergency repair. |

So, rounding Hyde Park roundabout, had to stop for a bus driver who obviously didn't know English traffic laws as well as hopefully does now. Eventually I get going again, changing gear by throttle input. Red light so stopped again, getting pretty peed orf by now. A following Cabbie hops out "got a problem there mate"? Yep, no clutch, which direction you go in? A10 mate, "Right, I'm going that way, let me come past you and follow me". So,thats what I did. Red lights, roundabouts, no problem, we just kept rolling till we got to the A10, he indicates left, I go past to a big thumbs up from him and I have never seen the A10 so empty for the ride home😁Owner never did say if he had any speeding tickets come through, so I assume he didnt🤣 |

Another good question, Mike. Stock they come left lever for front brake. I always make the quick change as a motorcycle rider I'd rather right lever for front brake. Even for my wife's "Bentley" in fact an electric Sparta. Everything on her bike is traditional and everything works perfectly, the system to adjust the handle bars is just brilliant. If you want a better thing in this field, go for a Batavus. Yes, electric assisted, we both have some pain in the back, no pun here!

Don’t know if anyone else has experienced ‘digi-docs’, a really clever idea that helps mortgage, credit card and other applications to be completed on line without face to face communication, or even a phone call! You photograph your documents with phone or tablet, then upload them straight to the organisation via a personal portal. Only problem is, having attempted a card application using the system, it ultimately required two trips to the nearest branch to achieve a result.....
Progress! |

Got back to my place by thumbing a lift & next day ripped off the lh hub & driveshaft from my mates mini & returned to the service station. Trouble was, he had drum brakes & l had uprated to Cooper 'S' discs & the brake flexible thread was not the same, so had to mole wrench the flexible to stop the fluid peeing out & drove the 30 miles back to Crewe with 3 working brakes. Luckily didn't have to do any heavy braking on the way, as even light braking was hairy to say the least !! Iain, sorry to hear about Jim & hope it does not spoil your fantastic trip ( too much). I feel sorry for you but assuming its never too late to do good things let me explain what Bob's talking about…
You're driving a car. Right? Nice person on the passenger seat (it works both LHD and RHD and lady or boy and ladyboy). See? Bob is crystal clear, you feel an emergency…*Got it? You slightly pull the hand brake just enough to have the stupid light on. Passenger cheeks are already red! You should try, if it works for Bob and me why not for you!!! |

I always thought rear engine Porkers had good traction, but for our 356SC / Will Stephens, something to consider for Peter Auto should it be snowing in Barcelona at the beginning of April....

My vintage racer ( John spooner from Worthing ) has LHD campagnolo brakes, I switched the cables so the rear is on my left, but the calliper are lhd too so the cable routing is odd!
The chains on the right side though |
