Uncle Tom and TVR?

Here is an interesting story from today's Motorsport News, there is a story in there saying that Tom Walkinshaw is prepearing a TVR Tuscan for next years Le Mans 24 Hours.

Now that is interesting chaps! I first watched Tom doing his thing when he was a Ford development engineer and put a GA V6 into a F 5000 car in the 70's and gave the V8s a run for their money. For someone who has prepared cars for a least 4 wins, 88 & 90 with Jag and was it 96 & 97 with Porsche using the same tub as he designed for the C class Jag, to enter again is always interesting but he will have to wave a major magic wand on the TVR to make it win in GT2 (I presume).

The TVR record is for slow cars that did not last in 03 but finished in 04 and 05 albeit somewhat off the pace with best laps in 03 of 4:19.507, much better after the Synergy treatment in 04 at 4:13.461 but backwards in 05 at 4:23.383 shows that some work is needed.

There are good things in these times as the 04 time compares with 4:12.331 by the winning Panoz this year but can you really be that lucky again and if you look at the fastest laps in each of those years, all by the Porsche at 03 - 4:08.151, 04 - 4:06.306, 05 - 4:07.164 and 06 - 4:04.426 you can see what "Uncle Tom" needs to do. I just can't see a car that is 8 or 9 seconds a lap slower than the best winning very often as it did this year. Still such a project will be interesting but even from a past outright winner will it get an entry without doing the qualifying series, it should not if all is fair but this is the ACO we are talking about

He has been down-under, but recently has cropped up more and more. From his role in Gloucester he has also been the negotiator for the clubs when talking to the RFU. Apparently the RFU haven't enjoyed the experience!

The man is a legend! Id like to meet him someday.

Is tobacco sponsorship completely banned in all motorsport?

A Silk Cut TVR would look quite good!

Andy Wallace, Johnny Dumfies and Jan Lammers for the driver lineup?

Im sure they could be presuaded by Uncle Tom.

Just to set a few things straight,

Tom Walkinshaw's new company is called TWG (Tom Walkinshaw Group) not TWR as that went down 4 years ago+

Tom has been involved in quite a few 'gig's' recently, most on which with HSV, his company in australia and Holden Racing where he is running the dealer team and the HSV company team both in the V8 Supercars.

He is also involved with the Bahrain racetrack and the racing events happening there.

As for the TVR talk nothing has been confirmed yet but keep your fingers crossed.

He did support the Group C series for almost a decade and helped kickstarting the GT revival with the XJ220C.

I was suprised to see him still in a hands on role with the Holden team at Bathurst, would be great to see a Walkinshaw Le Mans effort, especially in prototypes!

Yes it has to be auid that he and his prep management expertise have always been succesful with his cars always being a major part of any series entered. I see no reason why that wouldn't be repeated nowadays.

It depends on whom approached whom, but if Tom or one of his advisors did some kind of analysis of the TVR then they must think it's got potential alright.

On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if this would be a 'toe in the water' excercise to set up the infrastrucutre for a more substantial attack in a couple of years.

Maybe he'll be involved in any continuation of the Aston racing under new ownership, or, what about that Jaguar? TW and Jaguar certainly work well!

Seriously though, for TW to risk his reputation he will need to do a major rebuild something like the Pratt and Miller treatment of the Corvette and this will take big money. For such money to be invested in GT2 it would certainly add interest against the Porsche and Ferrari where similar developement sums have been spent over the years so one can only conclude that this is the TVR owner wishing to reinvent the marque alongside a foreign production base.

That in turn asks the question if there is to be major investment in the production base to make TVR more than it is at present and if so are TWG being asked to do the development of that facility and the road car as well. The stories one hears of the amount of prep a dealer has to do before he dare let a customer drive a new TVR from the showroom would indicate that factory QA has not been the best over the years so I wonder if there is more to this than just a race car development story

So what are the chances of a car like the TVR being "upgraded" to GT1 then? Beside the basic lack of speed from the car would a GT1 assault against the Astons/ Corvettes be a possibility?

Ps: This has to be good news!!!
